I finally got to meet Karen and Dawn at my first race ever in Calgary! What amazing people! Karen was very supportive and helpful and Dawn was fabulously inspiring! You should have seen Karen. After she finished she just ran back a couple hundred meters to meet up and run with us slow folks, taking pictures, and shouting encouragement. The first picture was taken by Karen. The second picture shows Morgan and I crossing the finish line. It also shows the back of Karen running away to meet other finishers. The third with the Muscular Dystrophy banner is a shot of the crowd. The forth and fifth pictures are of happy finishers, and the last is our group shot with Karen, me. Morgan, and Dawn. I had a lot of fun. Karen gave me a tiny purple heart that attaches to my shoelace as a reminder that “I had the courage to start”. This came as a complete surprise! Thank you Karen and Dawn. Dawn, if you read this I know that you and I are slow runners, but if I ever begin feeling sorry for myself, I will think of you and how much courage and spunk you have. Looking forward to other events with you. It’s just too bad we ran out of time and had to go our separate ways.

The only bad thing about the race was that my left knee started acting up again, but I made it anyway. I think it is because (no, really!) my left shoe seems to be disintegrating even though it only has 150 miles on it. The seams on the inside by my big toe are unraveling and my whole foot seems to want to slide off right through the covering. This is one pair of shoes that are going back to the Running Room for replacement because they are obviously defective. So yah, I am blaming my sore knee on the defective shoe. I have to do that, you see because otherwise I would not be able to register for the Hypothermic Half-marathon in Edmonton March 5th.

  1. Great photos and report. It was wonderful to meet you and your family as well. Thanks for the kind words.

  2. Next time we race together I will NOT plan any kids’ playdates for which I have to leave early. But it was worth it to stay for the door prizes, even though we didn’t win any!
