Biking to Calmar and back…
So far I’ve logged 253 kilometers on my bike this year. Today I did 66 kilometers over a ride time of 3:13:43. Is it because I am whacko crazy? Possibly. I wonder if there is anyone out there who has any tips on camping trips where you just take off on your bike and go till you drop, then camp out for the night, then go again the next morning. Guess I’ll have to ask around.
A pain free 7.42 kilometers today…
What a refreshing change to run a 6:44 pace per kilometer without pain. No knee pain at all. It was, as I said on the penguin group, delicious. Tomorrow I will accept an invitation from my wife Marilyn to bike to Devon with her. Summer is starting out to be very promising. Our Martagon Lilies are just now poking their heads out of the soil, which means they may actually flower this year as opposed to freezing their buds off like they have done for the last two years. Last two years at this time of year they were over a foot high and in bud when a weeks worth of minus 9 degrees C, frost and snow destroyed their potential. I think I’ll drop in a few pictures and here they are: Orange Marmalade Terrace City Hybrid Unknown Dalhansonii

Small test ride turns into marathon…
I thought I would check my running distance using my bike odometer today. I want to increase my weekly running distance by 10% so I wanted to know where that was. My plan was to hop on my bike and take a brief ride for 3.71 kilometers one way then I would come back and run it. SO while I did mark the distance I thought I would just go a little further. I decided to just go a little farther and loop back. By the time I got to the main highway, I thought, maybe I’ll just go to the bridge and then turn home. By the time I got to the bridge I thought it would be insane NOT to cross it so I did. By that time I was in Devon and I thought I would pick up some milk at the store. But first I would … Continue reading
Day out with Friends
I went to Edmonton for a bike ride on the river valley trail system. The trails sometimes go along the road as in the pictures but a lot of the time they are farther from traffic and much nicer. What I know of Calgary’s trails is that they are closer to the river (elevation wise) whereas Edmonton’s river trails are perched on cliffs higher above the river. I gotta tell you Calgary is way nicer. Candy is Rod’s daughter and Rod is my business partner (together we own and run Jar Media Ltd.), and of course, Marilyn is my wife. By the way, Jar Media Ltd. = Jar = John and Rod. JAR. Get it? We went 21 km today. It was my first time riding in the city. I have to say that it was enjoyable but I prefer my country haunts because there were too many people for … Continue reading
173.6 and counting…
I have run 173.6 miles since Jan 1st, and countless miles on the stationary bike and elliptical machines. I have also begun to record my swimming efforts. I am using a snorkel and mask because I have never been able to swim before. This Tuesday I plan on just using a pair of goggles because I think I may have finally clued into the breathing thing. The key is to wait until your head is out of the water before you take a breath! Who would have thought? Anyway I do 42 laps on a 25 meter pool so I have recorded a total of 2.1 kilometers so far. Before that, I have been practicing by just walking along the bottom while doing the front crawl and practicing breathing in neck deep water. That way I could concentrate on the movements rather than simply not drowning. I gradually added a … Continue reading
