Wednesday and Thursday…

Tomorrow is Wednesday and it is a total rest day. Thursday I will be going to West Edmonton Mall water park to climb really high stairs a lot and then slide down water slides in the wave pool. That will be quite like doing hill work, I think. Should be fun. Even though I have lived here since before West Edmonton Mall was a concept on someone’s drawing board, I have never used its water park. (Note added July 2007, the trip to WEM never happened).

Hydration pack update…

My second trial with the Sierra Hydration pack turned out well with the bite valve bitter taste issue resolved. I guess cleaning it by soaking it in soap and baking soda really helped. The only other tweak I can think of is to put one of those small velcro straps near the end of the bite valve so I can latch it near my opposite shoulder for easier access during a ride, plus if the bite valve doesn’t close properly, the water won’t leak out because the bite valve elevation will be higher than the outlet/water level on the bladder. This has happened a few times, but nothing serious. Jo from Toronto has told me about adding ice cubes to the pack rather than trying to freeze a little water in the pack the night before your ride. My little experiment of freezing water in the pack worked well enough, … Continue reading

Today’s swim and some new toys…

Well today I managed my usual 2 miles (or 3.2 km) on an indoor track wondering if I really should since it was so near to my bike ride yesterday, but it was all good. I am still a little tight from the ride, but I managed to do 2 miles at a pace of 10:30 which for me is not bad. Two miles is about 15 laps so I walked two laps as warm-up then I walked one lap as cool-down. So I did 18 laps, but I don’t count the warm-up/cool-down laps as work for training record purposes. After that I stretched out a bit which I find is best for speeding your recovery. Then I went and swam 1 km. I did better this week. I had no problems swimming the front crawl for one lap and I actually almost did two whole laps without stopping (I … Continue reading

My 100 km today did not go so well…

But at least I finished. In my previous 100 km on May 18th, I finished in 4 hours and 55 minutes, averaging 20.6 KPH. I wanted to beat that today but I could not even match it. I finished in 5 hours and 38 minutes averaging 17.87 KPH. I left home and headed south down HWY 60 to HWY 39 (a 30 km stretch) feeling good and making good time until I started heading west on HWY 39. As soon as you turn west, it is a 20 km stretch of road straight as an arrow to my turn around point. Unfortunately, the wind began blowing very hard out of the west. I tried to keep my speed above 25 KPH, but it was all I could do to keep it at 18 KPH. With only 15 km left to go before I hit the 50 km turn around point, … Continue reading

9 kilometer run today…

Today we decided to run from the Golf Course along the river trails to the HWY 60 bridge. There were a lot of hills and due to the recent rains there was some mud too. By the time we got to the bridge, I decided we (Marilyn ran with me) had done enough trail training and decided to go back via the upper paved trails. To do that we had to climb the paved road up the hill into town. This is the same road where they recently had the soapbox derby. All those carts careening down that hill is an annual event during Devon Days. We ran about a third of the way up that hill and walked the rest. Total 8 km, plus after we got back to the car, I decided to drive back to the bottom of that hill. I wanted to see if I could … Continue reading

32 kms biking in the cold…

Total biking distance for this year is 449 km. Marilyn and I went on an easy 32 km bike ride. Temp was 8 degrees C. Very cold and cloudy with 13 KPH winds out of the NE. I probably under-dressed. Tomorrow is a rest day, Sunday probably will be a long run somewhere.

Indian Test Pattern!

Here is a picture of a test pattern that used to be on TV after sign-off in the old days. For Mary D’s benefit she has to look at this! I quote form a web site: “Probably the most famous American B&W test pattern is the so-called “Indian Head” monoscope pattern. This pattern was originated by RCA in 1939; it was designed to be generated using a special tube called a monoscope, a CRT which had a metal plate target on which the pattern was printed. The black lines of the pattern would interrupt current flow as the pattern was scanned to provide the desired video output. These tubes could only handle black and white – no shades of gray hence they had to be simulated either with a halftone dot pattern or with patterns of fine lines…” From http://www.videouniversity.com/tvtestpa.htm In spite of the original technology and purpose of this … Continue reading
