From my bone scan results and the symptoms, my doctor thinks I have gout. What is gout? I quote from the following web site:

“Gout is a type of arthritis that results from too much uric (pronounced yur-ik) acid in the body. Uric acid is a waste product that naturally occurs in the body. It is normally flushed from the body by the kidneys through urine.
With gout the body either makes too much uric acid or does not excrete enough. The uric acid forms into crystals that, because these have nowhere else to go, deposit in different parts of the body.
Often the excess uric acid crystals deposit in the joints. This causes pain, swelling and tenderness in the area. This is called inflammation.
Gout most often affects the big toe but can also affect the ankle, knee, foot, hand, wrist and elbow.”
Apparently there is no cure, but anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to minimize damage and pain. It may or may not go away. It won’t make a stitch of difference to my training program; let me tell you all that right off the bat. I guess it is sort of a genetic defect or something. I should not be too surprised at that since I have a history of intense kidney stone attacks, and let me NOT tell you all how unpleasant and crippling they are! Just imagine a lot of Demerol, continual nausea and vomiting, and a few days to a week in the hospital peeing through a screen.
But anyway, no big deal, at least it isn’t serious or life threatening. So on with the program and to hell with whining about it. I am very sure it will go away in time. Hopefully it will not slow me down too much or cause me to over-supinate thus leading to other injuries. At least I am aware of the risk for further injury.
