5 km for Liz Itter today…

Well, hello Liz!

This day I had set aside for you and it was planned to be a 5 km run. I went out with my wife very late, around 2:45 PM so it was the hottest part of the day. Fortunately here in the Edmonton, Alberta area the weather is cool. Now the sun is lower in the sky, the days are getting shorter, and starting about now and on into late fall it is very beautiful. Something about fall is very special and I think after all these years I finally figured out what it is.

It is the quality of the sunlight that makes it special. What do I mean by quality? I mean the low angle of the sun casts dramatic shadows which, combined with the colorful and golden fall foliage, makes one think one is on a totally different planet. Combine the cool temperatures with a fresh, rain-washed sky still tinged with spicy ozone from a late summer thunderstorm and you’ve got peace and happiness in your soul.

But today’s run started out very painfully. The weather was partly cloudy with traces of light rain. Irregular breezes brought the promise of cool fall temperatures, but in the shadow of these breezes the sun beat down on the baking asphalt still damp from the rains. My body reflected the battle between summer and fall. My joints and bones protested they were first too cold and painful, then too hot and tired. After the first 2 km though, the pain gradually subsided and I managed to walk/run the entire distance. I had to laugh to myself as I reached the turn-around point because we picked up the pace and I was suddenly reminded that we were acting like barn-sour horses.

The run was uneventful. It was much less painful the second half than the first. We are very busy getting things together for our upcoming 7 day 75 km marathon to the West Coast of Vancouver Island. That also, is dedicated to you, Liz.

As Harvey Hilbert often says, be well…Liz
