6.5 today in a diamond studded sky…

Back from work late today, and I decided I had to get my run in so at 7PM I headed out for my 6.5 km run. The sky was not warm. The stars were glittering beady little things that seemed to be offended that I would intrude on their eternal icy vigilance. The feared hunter of the night sky was back only this time he was chasing *me*. Orion looked cold. My ice cleats produced a brittle song, crunching out a rhythm on the hard packed snow, and maybe was there a hint of Orion’s dog Sirius barking at my unwelcome intrusion. Hunting me.

I looked up at the black and indigo sky, pierced with celestial snowflakes. I saw a contrail from a jet brilliantly fluorescing fiery flames high in the stratosphere illuminated by the sun hidden beyond the horizon. It seemed to be a missile and it was streaking right toward Orion’s cold heart. Impact! A red flash! Was Orion wounded? No. The missile disappeared and Orion resumed his march through the centuries.

Meanwhile, my run was at an end and I became a feeble human again. How I long for Orion to disappear from the night sky so I can warmly greet Lyra once again and hear Vega sing a sweet summertime ballad.

Now you all know why I don’t often get too bored running alone.
