I ran 10 km at Devil’s Tower, Wyoming…

It was a spiritual place for the native Americans. One story has 7 maidens fleeing from a great bear and the bears claw marks are on the tower. The maidens took refuge at the top and were taken up to heaven to become the Pleiades star cluster. Even today natives go there to pray and often wrap prayer cloths around trees or leave prayer bundles. I prayed my own prayer. I asked the Great Spirit to take care of his people. To emphasize my prayer I cut my finger with my knife and left a drop of blood on the rocks. With respect. Sort of like when you were kids you cut your hand and exchanged blood with your friend thus becoming blood brothers. Now I am blood brother with the Great Spirit. OH! You didn’t do that? I forgot today’s generation is coddled and sheltered from all that stuff. … Continue reading

Well, I did yesterday’s run today instead…

…but I felt not well as my back was still spasming. Nevertheless I managed to squeak out the first lap in 56 minutes and the second in 51 minutes for a total of 1 hour and 47 minutes. My back is ok now, not perfect, but on the mend. See, I told you all you should run through the pain (as long as you’re not stupid about it). I have heard that 5Peaks is changing the course due to the mudslide on Way of the Cross hill so I don’t know what the new route will be. I won’t be running it again until the actual race as I am off to Montana tomorrow.

Ouch…

I’m supposed to run 2 loops of the Devon trail tomorrow so I can get my last real training run in before we head to Montana on Saturday on our way to South Dakota. But my right side muscles in my back all the way from the top of my shoulder to the middle of my butt is sore and the muscle on my left side feels bigger as if inflamed. I ran yesterday with it and I think I can still do it but I am moving pretty gingerly today. Anyway, yah, lots of pain that seems not to be related to running. It just is. Be nice for a little relief. I know it will go away in a week so I’ll just suck it up and train anyway because I will have so few days left to train before my next race I can’t miss this one. … Continue reading

15.4 km today in a bit of a windy cloudy chilly day…

So I did one loop through Clifford plus within Clifford I did 6 loops through Aspen Trail which is the only hilly area in Clifford but in hindsight is not a challenge at all. I saw absolutely no one during the run. As I was running along the boardwalk though, ducks would explode out from near the boardwalk as I approached, startling me as usual. It seems no matter how much that happens I am always startled. Anyway if I want some serious hill training I have to go to Devon. Clifford just is not challenging enough. I am taking Sunday and Monday off, and Tuesday I am doing a 7.5 km loop in Devon with some real hills. I am leaving for South Dakota this Saturday so I think I will have to schedule my two loop Devon run (15 km) for this Friday. I have no clue how … Continue reading

Another 7.5 km today in Devon’s River Valley

I checked out Way of the Cross hill again and nothing has been done except that workers had been there placing fluorescent stakes along the collapsed section. I still defied the closure signs and ran it again no problem. It was hot and the mosquitoes are now out in full force so I am glad I put on the bug stuff before I ran. Friday I will be doing about 11 or 12 km to Clifford. Sunday I will be doing 2 laps of the Devon course. Then a couple more runs and I am off to the Dakotas for a couple weeks, getting back just in time for race number 2.

Possible problem with the upcoming 5Peaks run in Devon

I ran the course for the first time yesterday and discovered that the Way of the Cross hill was closed due to a massive landslide that is dumping the hill into the ravine below. Only about 20 meters or so is closed off by signs and a plastic fence. I ran through it anyway and it is passable yet still dangerous. I contacted Kamren Farr of 5Peaks about the problem and he will be checking it out today. I don’t think the race will be canceled, but it may be that the route will be changed. Only Kamren can say… So ya, I ran the 7 km course yesterday with Marilyn and took it very easy because Marilyn is just getting used to trail running and has to nurse a sore quad muscle. So we walked a lot with me like a puppy dog running up every hill as fast … Continue reading

The first 5Peaks race of the season is history!

By my standards I did very well. Total run was 15 km for the Enduro class, which is the class I ran. The Sport class was half that, or 1 lap versus 2 laps for the Enduro. The weather was spectacular (sunny and warm with no mosquitoes), and the entire course was sheltered from a strong wind which plagued the start line. The fresh green leaves were just beginning to open on the aspen and balsam poplars. Although I did not see much today, there are loons on the lake as well as all kinds of waterfowl, mule deer, and a lot of other wildlife. There is a really nice section with pristine and perfect white birch. The trails were nice and dry with a little mud only in two places which were at the bottom of hills and easily avoided. I was very worried. I did not sleep much … Continue reading
