Canmore, here I come! Low blood sugar. Bees.

Well I just got back from my last run before Canmore. I did my 5 km in 37:15

I felt like I had low blood sugar this time around. I did not take my usual Gatorade to sip on, I just took water. I was thinking that maybe I have trained my body to expect the sugar rush from Gatorade whenever I run, but then again I took just a little water in my last run too and felt no wooziness then that one might get from low blood sugar. Other than that, I felt pretty good about my calf muscle. I’m still quite worried about it though, considering I am going to run a half marathon in the mountain trails of Canmore.

I have trained with my hydration pack so I’m not really worried about that, and my new Mizunos already have 50 km on them so they are good to go. But man, are they clean looking compared to my retired Sauconys.

There is one thing that may have contributed to my weakness during today’s run, but of course I have no way to be sure. Yesterday I was rooting around in the woods of my back yard scraping away debris to plant a few large Martagon lilies in the hope of naturalizing them. It was very cloudy, windy and cold at about 4 degrees C. Suddenly I felt an ant or something had crawled up my coat sleeve and stung me so I brushed it away. I saw nothing there. Then I suddenly got 5 or 6 more strings and began to be a little puzzled. Then I noticed I was being swarmed by bees. Apparently I had disturbed some type of ground nest for bees. I am not sure if they were bees or hornets, I’ll have to check them out again later when I have more time. I had to abandon that particular area. Fortunately they were not very aggressive, possibly due to the cold. And their stings were hardly felt although now they are pretty itchy and my left forearm where I was stung repeatedly is swollen up pretty good. By that I mean it is very noticeable compared to my other arm.

I wonder if that will give me some sort of bee superpower and make me run faster? Spiderman, step aside!
