I have good run news and bad run news…

Well, after my second ART treatment on Monday, I ran a good 11 km at a 7:16 pace on Tuesday and felt really good. No problems whatever.

Then today, I tried to run 5 km at a less than 6:00 pace and within the first km I knew I could not do it. I have the strength and power and oxygen capacity to do it but I re-injured my calf muscle. Or should I say I aggravated it because I had to slow down and nurse it, and I ended up walking a lot again. I did the 5 km in an 8:00 pace. That would be a 40 minute 5 km.

I have little experience (thankfully) with injuries so I don’t quite know how to let it heal. I thought it was good, and perhaps it would have been good had I not tried for a 6 minute pace. I guess a 7:16 pace was ok but not a 6:00 pace. Live and learn. I could be disappointed, but that would be a waste of time when I could use that time to get better and do other things. After all, what has disappointment ever accomplished except to burn precious time off a clock in an unproductive manner. I won’t pretend that I am NOT disappointed, but I refuse to dwell on it too much.

So I have gotten some good advice from my running list, my fellow penguins. I have decided to stop running until the next race October 8th. I am still waiting for more advice and I hope I get it from my penguins friends.

I had another ART treatment today and the ART guy said that I could probably bike with no ill effect, but that I should be careful about it. He worked on my calf and also on my same side quads. It was painful but I hope effective. He also worked on a rotator problem in my left shoulder.

Time will tell if it is effective. I have another appointment Monday. I have to be a good boy and stop running until healed because getting fixed is expensive! It is costing me 40 dollars per treatment and so far I have invested 120.00 into it. Still less than the price of a good pair of running shoes I guess!

I have another karate practice (my second one) tomorrow for two hours. I really enjoyed the last one so I hope this one is also good. I expect to register in the association either tomorrow or maybe next Tuesday. We have lessons on Tuesdays and Saturdays at a local school gym, but if I register, I can take classes at any affiliated dojo in Alberta. I will have to register if I want to be allowed to continue. Will report on tomorrow’s lesson, well, tomorrow!

After my initial 2 month stint with running, I spent more than a year out of it, due to injury. I went to physiotherapy for 6 months and a chiropractor for another 6 months. (Thank God for student health insurance!) I had 2 failed attempts to get back into it before I finally managed to do it. (My one-year anniversary of running is coming up soon. Can’t wait!)

My experience with this taught me: 1) forget about the money, your health and well-being are worth it. (Insurance didn’t cover it all. What I had to pay hurt, given my student status.) 2) one way or another your body will let you know it is in charge. When you listen, it is happier. Patience is an ongoing skill I have to learn. :-)

Best to you in the running and martial arts.
