Karate 14 - Yellow Belt achieved…

by Administrator ~ November 24th, 2007. Filed under: Karate, Training Notes.

Today’s grading was my first and we (Marilyn and me) found it a lot harder than we expected physically. The first hour was the worst with commands coming fast and furious from the Sensei. The katas were done with intensity and heart I have to say. Achieved our yellow belts. Other colored belts also achieved their goals and graduated to a higher level, but some did not. Some yellow belts stayed where they were and some white belts did not pass. Some white belts I know did not show up for the ranking. I was going to add that they were just kids but there were other kids of the same age who did show up and they did fine.

Right now I am exhausted and feel totally drained. The second hour was spent in a similar way with the addition of kihon kumite 1 through 5 for us white belts. Then we had to spar with the black belts one on one. I had to laugh as Marilyn fought Kerri, a Shodan belt and she really took it to her! I did the same with my black belt; I was very aggressive and Marilyn and me both had to keep chasing them down. We were all attack! Of course, we both know that if they wanted to they could have dropped us VERY quickly. They were just in defensive mode, after all, why attack a white belt? Like Marilyn just said to me now, it would be like kicking your dying grandma! But we got points for spirit. We had good spirit. We were not timid in any way and at the white belt level that is what they are looking for rather than technique, form, or power.

So! Woo-hoo! Marilyn and me are now Yellow belts! We will be getting our belts next Saturday. Next ranking is in March and we will be getting our Orange belts. But before that we have a lot more to learn. We have to learn at least as much as we know already, which is an additional 5 katas and more. We get to learn the cat stance now! Leapin Leopards! The cat stance! I should like that one!

Congratulations (can you say kudos in Karate?) to both you and Marilyn! I know you have worked hard for those belts. Keep it up!
