A run and a rant…

We now have our first permanent snow on the ground this winter. Temperature was -18 C, but not much if any wind chill and overcast. I wore my yaktrax for the first time this winter. My pace was 7:50 per km. I ran 11 km in 1:26:11.

Did I tell you that I hate winter? It’s not like summer at all! There are no flowers, no warm fuzzy sunshine, no gentle thundershowers, no rainbows. The only good thing about winter is that it makes you appreciate spring, summer, and fall all the more.

Seriously, winter is good for our particular brand of ecosystem up here in the great white north. Kills bugs and scorpions and all kinds of other nasty creatures that our American friends have that would not at all be welcome here. Things like killer bees, fire ants, and weird presidential life forms that live in the Bush surrounding white houses.

I guess the only thing that I find really hard and stressful to cope with about winter is having to drive in it which includes digging myself out of my driveway after every major storm. Our driveway is too long to shovel by hand so if we get anything more than 6 inches we have to rely on unreliable snow ploughs (Canadian spelling?) which usually means we won’t be getting out of our driveway till tomorrow or the next day when they decide to show up. Then we pay them.

The other thing is all the IDIOT drivers (and I mean that in the nicest possible way) who wonder why they can’t drive like maniacs anymore and not get into the ditch or cause accidents. I mean, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon or a rocket scientist to realize that snow fall or sub zero temps plus rain = slippery. Why can’t people get that through their heads? Why is it that after EVERY snowfall you have dozens of accidents and dozens more people in the ditch? Could it be that they are driving too fast??? Naah!

I know that this is a rant, so I guess I’ll finish by saying that it is partly the fault of employers who frown on people being late for work. I don’t really need to assign blame to people who don’t want to leave a half-hour earlier to go to work at a reasonable speed. But they are playing the odds and taking too many risks.

Take care out there.

  1. Winter has the most amazingly beautiful hoar frost, and sundogs. Don’t see those in the summer. And winter has warm fuzzy sunshine, it just isn’t AS warm, or last long enough. Hard to make snowangels in the summer. And snowshoeing in the mountains is a special kind of winter picnic.

I will admit I HATE cleaning snow and ice off my car, but I don’t mind shoveling my short walk. And I have a strange fascination with the styrofoamy squeak that my feet make when running on hard-packed snow.

I hate the tenseness that the cold gives my shoulders and neck. Hate shivering. Hate numb fingers.

LOVE LOVE LOVE warmin up, though :)
