Todays 6.5 km…

Overcast, ran an 8:08 pace so a little slower than last time. It went OK. That’s it. Enough said.

Another 6.5 km in perfect weather…

7:58 pace today. This is still not my expected 7:30 training pace, but it is getting there. The run went well, otherwise there is not much else to say about it.

Karate 12

I worked out at the gym today on my calves, hip adductors, did some squats for my quads, and isolated my triceps and biceps to strengthen them. I am strengthening my elbow joint more when I work my triceps. I have to begin with very low weights. Marilyn and me later went to karate. We went through what we needed to know for the upcoming grading. To achieve our yellow belt, we have to know 5 kihon kumites, 5 katas, and 5 kicks, as well as the associated punches and blocks. Today they had us walk forward while blocking, then walk backwards using the same blocks. Walking backwards is not easy, I almost have to re-learn all the blocks again. All belt levels do the same kicks the white belts do, but are graded more severely. They are expected to have more perfect form than white belts. For example, a … Continue reading

8.5 km today…

In 1:14:21 for an 8:45 pace of run/walk. I still feel pretty much out of shape running-wise. But hey, I’m old. Not only do I not heal as fast as when I was young, I lose it a lot faster too if I am inactive for any length of time. Anyway, it was a nice day with the sun out, no breeze and about 5 degrees C or so.

Karate 11

Wow it was a hard workout today. We had a whole lot of black belts come in from Edmonton and surrounding areas this morning because they are getting ready for a tournament in Toronto soon, I think next week. It was pretty crowded. They were in the back doing their own thing while we white belts and colored belts practiced on our own. Buhrs Sensei had us doing a lot of push-ups and core strengthening exercises after our warm-up. Then we practiced our kicks using the protective mats again. I did pretty good except that my right toe started to get sore from the impact even though were we impacting on the instep, the shock of hitting the hard leather (or is it vinyl?) bag eventually made it pretty sore. Then Barrau Sensei took us through a long series of katas, stressing form and count and every time one of … Continue reading

A work-out day: 5 km and…

I went to the gym in Devon today and worked on my quads and calves. While there I explored other machines for hip abductors, triceps etc. There are several machines I can use to help me in my karate training. I would really like to be able to use them twice a week. We’ll see how that goes in the next few weeks. I feel like I have really weak quads, it was really hard on my knees to do a simple squat with only the weight of the machine’s bar (no added weights). I’ll see how that improves over time. In karate we often do calf raises where you lift up onto your tip toes. We do it with our feet pointed ahead, then 45 degrees apart, then pigeon-toed, then we do them again with our feet pointed straight ahead but we go up in three stages. We raise … Continue reading

Karate 10

I had to donate blood today at the Canadian Blood Service at 5:15 PM so I was a little concerned about going to karate afterwards. You know, they say no strenuous activity for 6 to 8 hours after. Anyway it was ok since we did not have to do push ups. Instead, after the warm-up, we mostly did katas. We did a little bit of punching for a warm-up, then we took out the cushy pads. We took turns holding the bags so our partner could practice a front snap kick, front thrust kick, roundhouse kick, and back kick. It was a good exercise and we had lots of fun pushing our partners back with the force of our kicks. Then we did all four katas plus “Ko Tai Ran” which has a number of shuto blocks in it. (Note: I do not know the proper words here so “Ko … Continue reading
