I hate winter…

Just so you all know, let me be perfectly clear: Winter sucks big time. I ran 11 km today in 1:34:12 (an 8:34 pace) and it was bitterly cold with a stiff breeze. It was – 21 C to -27 C with the wind chill. I was not over or under dressed. The most important items not to forget are the toque, and a neck tube, the areas of your body that lose the most heat. I have never had a problem with cold feet even with my everyday socks because there is so much warm blood being pumped through that it makes no never mind. I had on four layers, one cool max t-shirt, one long sleeve cool max, a long sleeve sweater and a thin windbreaker. I had gloves too. Make no mistake, you will get wet from perspiration, but better wet than frozen.

As for the icy cold air and how it affects your lungs, I have never had a problem. It depends on how dry the air is, and on how much wind there is. You can always breathe through your shirt, neck tube, or gloved hands for spot relief if needed.

  1. I have been known to run in weather that cold once in a while. I don’t prefer it, but it can be done. I only cover my mouth for the first block or two if I really need to.

In weather that cold I vaseline exposed skin where I think I might dry out (around my eyes) or get frostbite (nose) – it helps.

My hands ALWAYS get icky sweaty in mitts. They survive.
