As for the icy cold air and how it affects your lungs, I have never had a problem. It depends on how dry the air is, and on how much wind there is. You can always breathe through your shirt, neck tube, or gloved hands for spot relief if needed.

I have been known to run in weather that cold once in a while. I don’t prefer it, but it can be done. I only cover my mouth for the first block or two if I really need to.
In weather that cold I vaseline exposed skin where I think I might dry out (around my eyes) or get frostbite (nose) – it helps.
My hands ALWAYS get icky sweaty in mitts. They survive.
