Philip J. Corso’s book…
“The Day After Roswell” is the title of Philip Corso’s book. I read the edition dated 1997 that has the forward by Senator Strom Thurmond. I have to say that this is a most entertaining read. It is far from good literature, but as a science fiction or fantasy novel, it is quite entertaining. I found the first part of the book most intriguing when Corso writes of the probable sequence of events during and immediately following the recovery of the crash debris. I did read many reviews of this book online and also Stanton Freidman’s comment on this as well (see: http://stantonfriedman.com/). The bottom line is this: This book is a good read, but not because I believe Corso’s opinions. It is fun to read. I read it in just a couple of days. The other bottom line I need to state is that I think this book has … Continue reading

Happy Solstice!
The precise moment of the 2007 solstice will be Sat., Dec. 21, 11:08 P.M. MST according to one of my Google searches. Eastern time would make that 1:08 AM Dec 22nd. But let’s not quibble about the hours and minutes here. Today it is overcast so I am glad I took this photo of the sun and its relationship to my horizon yesterday, December the 21st. I took this picture at high noon. Now you all know how long our shadows are up here in the north even though that’s the highest we will see the sun for a while!

WordPress blog finally updated…
I finally updated WordPress to its current 2.3.1 version, but it was a weird struggle. My internet service providers (tera-byte.com) were quick off the mark and very efficient. I wondered at times if I had lost everything. I had to change servers because the server I used to be hosted on did not have the minimum version for mySQL. So tera-byte said I could use another one of their servers which did have the latest version of the database program. I transferred my files from the old server, then I had to make a new database and somehow figure out how to import my old database into the new one. I don’t do this sort of thing every day so I pretty much had to bull my way through it. Some of you might not be able to view johnsjar.com until that DNS change is reflected in other servers throughout … Continue reading

Run faster, keep warmer…
I ran 6.5 km today in 0:46:27 for a 7:09 pace. A lot faster than my 7:30 training goal. But it was -16 and I was cold so I ran faster to keep warmer. Actually, I find that unless I can maintain a 7:30 pace or faster right from the start, I have to work a lot harder to catch up. The last time I ran an over 8 minute pace was not only because of excess snow on the road, but because I did not make a 7:30 pace start. Tomorrow we will see how I run the 11 km. I missed a day of running because I ran out of time this week, so I am looking at this as a rest week. Next week (starting tomorrow), I run one 11 km, and two 7 km.

U.S. Congress approves fuel efficiency energy bill…
This is gong to be a rant. I need to blow off some steam so here goes… Quote from a news article from cbc.ca: “Democrats said when the fleet of gas-saving vehicles are eventually widely on the road, the fuel economy requirements will save motorists $700 US to $1,000 US a year in fuel costs.” This relates to the new energy bill where higher fuel efficiency standards come into effect. It would “…will boost mileage by 40 per cent from 25 miles per gallon to an average of 35 miles per gallon — around 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres.” What do I think? I approve of any efficiency increase and of course any environmental benefits to come from that, but I really hate when these politicians bullshit us by telling us it will save us money. It won’t save us money at all. First of all, they will simply charge … Continue reading

Karate 20
Last night we had our last lesson of the year. We break for the holiday season, and resume January 5 which is a Saturday. It was a small class. Chris, a brown belt led the warm-up. Kerri was the only Sensei for today. The first hour we did basic kumites. The second hour we practiced basics. During the break we had some fun with practicing our punches, kicks, and blocks on a beach ball. The school had left volleyball nets up and there were a lot of cheap plastic beach balls of varying sizes lying around (from some previous school function I would guess). Some of us divided into teams and played a free for all type of “volleyball” where we tried to use blocks, kicks, and punches in hitting the ball. We had a lot of fun. It was quite a workout and our focus and reflexes were tested … Continue reading

I wish they would plow the roads…
I ran 11 km today but it was hard because I was sinking into the snow and having to slide back three inches for every step forward. My pace was 8:26, almost a full minute slower than I would like. And I worked a hell of a lot harder too. Anyway, I can’t complain. At least I am still getting out there. The 2.5 km of trails on the particular route I take require a lot more concentration due to the hardened footprints and uneven paths. Lots of ankle work there! The weather was mild, only -5 with no wind, but the shadows are long and the sun is low on the horizon. I want spring!
