Run 7, 2008

Ran 7 km in 54:02 for a 7:43 pace today. I started out fast, then slowed down a bit, then had to stop for an important cell phone call so I did not make my pace. I did end up running really really fast for a while to catch up but I never managed to catch up. One more 7 km run this week. Next Sunday I am turning into sort of a rest week in that although I am increasing my LSD to 14 km from 11, I am doing it at an 8 km pace for this and the other two runs of that week. The following week will be the same except I may shift to doing 8 x 400 meters or some such thing on Wednesday and a tempo run on Friday.

Karate 21

Finally, karate class is back after the holidays! I tried to take it easy today because at 5:15 I gave blood at the local “Canadian Blood Service”, which is the street name for those blood sucking vampires from hell. I’m kidding! They are not blood sucking vampires. On the other hand, I haven’t seen a vampire since I started appeasing them by giving blood regularly. There may be a lie of omission here. Anyway, we did a lot of stretching which I am not good at. But it keeps me from getting worse at least. Then we went through kihon kumites and finally we did katas. We did Ko Tai Rin and Pinan Nidan. Not well, but we did it. It is so difficult to perform the simplest blocks perfectly. That is why we will practice them over and over again until we start foaming at the mouth and fall … Continue reading

Run 6, 2008

It was a very warm day for a run. Today’s run was 11 km in 1:19:24 for a 7:13 pace. I succeeded in hitting the trail milepost a little early partly due to the faster pace I maintained on the way in, and partly due to the fact that the trails were very well packed down. This week is my last week before I start to increase my weekly distance. Wednesday’s run will be reduced, possibly Friday’s as well, and next Sunday’s LSD will be 14 km at a slower pace.

Run 5, 2008

Ran a 7 km 7:10 pace today. I managed to squeeze shut the broken coils on my yaktrax with no further apparent damage. The weather was good at -6 C. I need to begin to change my routine more in line with a three day marathon training schedule. I have not done that yet partly because I have not thought about the changes much. I need to do some repeats on on of the days, but I don’t want to decrease my current weekly distance totals. If I replace Wednesday’s 7 km run, I would like to increase Friday’s and Sunday’s LSD to compensate for it, less the distance of the repeats of course. But I’ve been too busy to think about it much. I will change my routine a wee bit at a time until I am there.

Run 4, 2008

Seven kilometers at a 7:25 pace. I had to dress for it today since it was minus 19 degrees C. There were ice crystals floating in the air. There was no wind.

Run 3, 2008

I did fairly well yet still managed to lose 1.5 minutes by the time I got out of the trails and back on the road home. That would be at the 7 km mark. I had 4 to go and was 1.5 minutes behind my goal pace so I picked it up a notch and managed to finish 4 seconds overtime. Hardly worth noting. So that would put my pace at 7:30 and fractions of a second in change. 11 km in 1:22:34. Next run is Wednesday. It is supposed to be 7 km. I don’t want to stay in maintenance mode forever though! Soon I have to examine my marathon training plan again and see what I can see.

I hope you appreciated your holidays.

Growing up, my own family was very dysfunctional so as a child, I evolved away from and rebelled against the social norm. Today birthdays and other holidays (yes, even Christmas), are something to be dreaded, not celebrated. So I can’t imagine anyone paying attention to such things. I want you all to realize that my perspective and attitude towards holidays, birthdays, and such, is twisted and warped. Or is it? But it is not my fault. It is the fault of my circumstances and the so-called “family life” that I grew up with. The good news is that I understand what it is all about, even though I am not emotionally attached in a normal way to the concept. The other good news is that when I wish someone a happy birthday, you can be sure it comes from the heart and is really genuine. What I don’t like about … Continue reading
