Karate 30
We had a very small class yesterday. For the first time I was the fourth highest rank there – that’s a laugh! Sensei Pat Buhrs and Sensei Kerri Trotman was there and also Chris, a brown belt. After our usual warm we again practiced kicks and kata. Our teachers emphasized proper form for the upcoming ranking. We were told that we had to know the kumite and katas appropriate for our upcoming ranking, which I do know. I was told that the judges would be looking for proper form so we have to make sure our stances are correct, that we punch to the middle, and that our shoulders are square and always over our hips. I should be able to rank as long as I get in a few more practice sessions outside of classes.

Run 21, 2008
I ran on a nice day today with the temps hovering a notch below zero in warm fuzzy sunshine. I did a trail loop again, losing a few minutes on some treacherous ice on the well packed trail. I ran a total of 14 km in 1:46:48 for a 7:37 pace which is slightly slower than my goal pace of 7:30 for an LSD. I did not take my yaktrax today because the roads are almost dry. This week is exceptionally busy for me at work so I hope I can maintain my schedule without too much alteration.

Karate 29
It was a very active lesson today. Some intense warm up and basic practice of blocks, kicks, and punches occurred in the first hour. The second hour had us practicing katas and kumite. Actually we just did Pinan Nidan which is the highest kata a yellow belt needs to grade to orange. Of course the higher belts were doing their own thing, and the white belts also. The class is often split up into groups based on belt level for obvious reasons. Often though, we all work together. I finally got my sparring gloves today. Things are going very well and I can see that I am getting better. My stances are lower and more accurate, and my kicks are more accurate, controllable, and stable. Grading will happen before Easter and I think I will be ready, barring injuries. It is amazing to watch one’s stability and “perfection” of form … Continue reading

Running history…
I was wondering how long I have been running in a more or less serious and consistent way so I went through my records and my blog and determined that I have been running for about 2.5 years.

I ran a glorious 7 km in glorious sunshine and warmth today. Did I mention that it was glorious? The sunshine was yellow. The roads were dry. I did not use my yaktrax. I ran it in an easy 50:51 for a 7:15 pace. Spring. It’s coming to a theater near you soon. Are you ready for it?

I was going to start a rumor about Steve Fossett…
I heard the other day that this man was finally declared legally dead and that inspired me to start a rumor about Steve Fossett, the rich adventurer who disappeared during a solo flight in Nevada. I was going to post this note and say that I would deliberately start a rumor that Steve did not crash but had deliberately flown over and landed or was shot down over the restricted Area 51 and was made to “disappear”. I wanted to prove that even though I would precede this rumor by declaring it was a total fabrication on my part and that I had absolutely zero evidence of any kind, the rumor would quickly spread through the internet and become either “fact” or urban legend. But the idea already is out there apparently.

Run 19, 2008
I ran 31 laps (7 km is 30.8 laps) around the indoor track today in 44:46 for a 6:23 pace. After that, I stretched and went for a nice swim and a soak in the hot tub. I lead a tough life. Sucks to be me. Right now I am watching the lunar eclipse, or at least glancing out at it from time to time. Next run is Friday and is also a 7 km run.
