The end is in sight…

The end of the flu that is. I feel almost human today. I hope to shuffle around outside a bit to remind me that I haven’t burnt up a road for nine days. Nine days ago today I walked 7 km in defiance of an imminent visit from the plague. That’s a long time. I won’t be running today either. I have been out of touch, but I think there is a karate ranking happening on Tuesday which I hope to participate in. I have not been practicing that either. I live…again! Or at least I am beginning to live.

The pain in gain falls mainly on the brain…

You ever heard the phrase, “No pain, no gain”? Sure you have. And you probably know that most athletes know this is a load of rubbish. The correct idea is that if you exercise to the point of pain, you are exercising too hard – to the point of injury if you have not already injured yourself. Yet there is some truth to this phrase nevertheless. The problem with using words or phrases as catch-all descriptions is that they are so black and white. And so the English language (and I presume any other language) evolves. Like paleontologists and evolutionists who search for missing links, new words are created to ease the stark contrast between black and white. Words such as “gray”. But then people think, now there are only three things, black, white, and gray. So others try to fill in the gaps by inventing “shades of gray”. And … Continue reading

Running with the flu…

Or should I say NOT running because of the flu? I just posted a comment on Karen’s blog saying how I feel like gnawing my own limbs off! I want to run, yet can’t. Only a runner knows that frustration. Only a runner feels anguish over having a great running streak nipped in the bud by the flu. You are on a roll. You feel terrific and strong. You are breaking PR’s left and right. You are just beginning training for a marathon. Then BANG you are blind sided by that energy sapping flu bug. You begin worrying that you are going to lose everything you’ve worked for for so long and you will have to start over from absolute zero. Which leaves you no time to train for a marathon. You love to run, you want to run. But you have suddenly changed from an athlete into a wheezing … Continue reading

Down for the count…

I guess it has to happen sooner or later. I am down with an energy-sapping, schedule-shredding cold. This is the first cold I have had since as long as I can remember. I have cold symptoms. They seem pretty mild yet they are strong enough to prevent me from running. I was going to start my marathon training tomorrow with a 17 km long run but now I think I will delay it a week. We’ll see how it goes. I was also supposed to go to karate class today but that would be futile. Which is too bad since there will be a grading very soon. So if I miss this grading so what? There will always be another one and I’m in it for the exercise anyway.

Run 27, 2008

Run 27 wasn’t a run at all but a walk because I was feeling like I had a cold or the flu or something. Definitely something is draining my energy reserves and also a sore throat, sneezing and sniffles too. Nevertheless I was determined not to miss the calorie burn. My walk took me and hour and a half for 7 km which out of my own curiosity is a 12:51 pace. In other words a walk. Still it counts because it is extra to what I would normally do in a day, ie: It counts as exercise. Hmm…come to think of it running IS what I normally do! But at least I went out without trashing my body too badly. I hope I feel better for Sunday’s first really long run of 17 km. Gotta start training for that marathon after all!

Run 26, 2008

Because of a client whose router went wonky, I could not get to the indoor track until about 6 PM. So I felt really bad (and angry) about that. Nevertheless I bit the bullet and ran 7 km indoors in 44:18 for a 6:20 pace. Tomorrow I will get my revenge on the router demons by going to an extra karate class at Elmwood dojo again.

Karate 33

We went to the Elmwood dojo for the first time and experienced a great class. Got to understand Bunkai a little bit more. I got a glimpse into the “secrets” of real karate as opposed to the structured kata. Kata movements without Bunkai are very artistic and a good way to train your body memory but the kata hide secrets that only Bunkai can reveal. At least that is my take on it. Sensei Jordan was there, and only a few other colored belts so it was a small class. I felt pretty dizzy at times because I had just given blood but I learned a lot anyway.
