Karate 33

We went to the Elmwood dojo for the first time and experienced a great class. Got to understand Bunkai a little bit more. I got a glimpse into the “secrets” of real karate as opposed to the structured kata. Kata movements without Bunkai are very artistic and a good way to train your body memory but the kata hide secrets that only Bunkai can reveal. At least that is my take on it.

Sensei Jordan was there, and only a few other colored belts so it was a small class. I felt pretty dizzy at times because I had just given blood but I learned a lot anyway.

  1. I knew what a kata was, from my son’s lessons some years ago, but was unaware of the word bunkai, so I looked it up in Wikipedia. Thanks for this education you’re giving me in karate, John!

Oh, and thank you for giving blood!

  2. You are welcome Karen. But I am definitely feeling my age. If you are ever interested in taking Karate, might I recommend the same style I chose? It is authentic Okinawan karate and has bout 70 kata as opposed to Goju Ryu, although authentic too, which has only about 10 or so. By all means, stay away from non-authentic styles like unrestricted martial arts or the karate mills that sell belts.
