The pain in gain falls mainly on the brain…
You ever heard the phrase, “No pain, no gain”? Sure you have. And you probably know that most athletes know this is a load of rubbish. The correct idea is that if you exercise to the point of pain, you are exercising too hard – to the point of injury if you have not already injured yourself. Yet there is some truth to this phrase nevertheless. The problem with using words or phrases as catch-all descriptions is that they are so black and white. And so the English language (and I presume any other language) evolves. Like paleontologists and evolutionists who search for missing links, new words are created to ease the stark contrast between black and white. Words such as “gray”. Running with the flu…
Or should I say NOT running because of the flu? I just posted a comment on Karen’s blog saying how I feel like gnawing my own limbs off! I want to run, yet can’t. Only a runner knows that frustration. Only a runner feels anguish over having a great running streak nipped in the bud by the flu. You are on a roll. You feel terrific and strong. You are breaking PR’s left and right. You are just beginning training for a marathon. Then BANG you are blind sided by that energy sapping flu bug. You begin worrying that you are going to lose everything you’ve worked for for so long and you will have to start over from absolute zero. Which leaves you no time to train for a marathon.
