Run 37, 2008

I can’t believe I really did this but I did. I decided to go out and run a 17 km in spite of the fact that I have a huge chest cold and can barely talk. Maybe it was because I did not feel too down in the energy department. Who can say?

All I know is that there are generally two reactions to a situation like this. Which one is remembered depends on the outcome of my run.

The first outcome would be death. Then the survivors would say, “He had it coming for doing such a stupid thing! Imagine running when you’re sick! What a retard.”

The second outcome would be me finishing and living. Then people might say, “What a determined person! What grit to run when you are sick!”

Personally, I am still not sure which reaction is appropriate even though I did finish and survive. Mind you, I did not have a lot of energy or oxygen capacity and I had to take walk breaks frequently. And I was trying not to cough too much, because uncontrolled coughing can really hurt. I’ll spare you the gory details.

I’m happy I did it even though my time was in the gutter at 2 hours and 40 minutes, a full 2 minutes per km slower. So I just want to say this, and forgive me for shouting a little bit:

NOTHING, no NOTHING, neither death, nor taxes, nor bubonic plague, nor any of their friends, relatives, and acquaintances will keep me from running my marathon! BwaaaHAHAHAHA! If any fool gets in my way, I will DESTROY them! Bwaaa-ha ha ha ha haaaaa! *HACK* *CHOKE* *COUGH* …clears throat:

I am a runner.

Even though you haven’t died (yet), count me in the former reaction, John. Running with a chest cold is not a good idea. I have two running buddies down with pneumonia and it’s not a pretty thing.

Don’t make me come up there…

Sheepishly trying to slink away into the shadows…

Well, gosh, and gee willikers Karen! I…I didn’t know…I mean how could I? I’ve never tried before. I just wanted to see what it would be like. But I respect your reaction. I repent.
