Run 34, 2008

Well, I resigned myself to doing 17 km today on the treadmill, then died of boredom after only 6 km. Enough said.

Here is why I am NOT running today…

After running outside ALL winter in freezing and abject misery, then having had a taste of a couple of days of warm sunny fuzzy weather, I absolutely refuse to run in THIS: OK, so maybe running outside in winter is something you get used to and not so bad, but it stills sucks compared to running in summery conditions. There is no end in sight for this nasty weather until the end of the week when it will gradually warm up to double digits by the first week of May.

Comida sin Mo and Jon

Too bad you could not make it Mo and Jon. Look what you missed: Don’t blame us if there is mold growing on this by the time you all get to driving up here. Well, hopefully when you do come it will be BBQ time. You would have had pupusas con curtido con salsa de tomate y maíz y espárrago y salsa picante cruda y tajadas de cerdo con la cebolla y vino pinot noir. So we ate it then. Me, Marilyn, Longnamenocansay, and Buffy. Thinking of you and Jon. And getting really really into the wine tonight. Sorry you could not be here, but we hope you have a good weekend together and we look forward to meeting Jon at a future time. Ha ha.

Karate 38

We learned a few new things today. When I say “learned”, I mean became aware of their existence and sort of memorized the moves. Sensei Pat Buhrs is back and as usual we had lots of fun enjoying his entertaining teaching style. He is a very good teacher. We began learning the Yakushoku Kumites today after the usual warm ups and after we went through our new katas. For the first time in a long while I felt not too terribly hamstrung by my foot problems. We like karate.

Run 33, 2008

What a wicked day to run! Nasty cold and wind chill. Because my route runs basically North-South, and the wind was out of the North, it was hell on Earth for the first 3.5km. But on the way home with the wind at my back it was much better…comfortable even. So I finished in 50:53 for a 7:16 pace.

Run 32, 2008

I managed to get a 7km run in today at the indoor track in 45 minutes and 6 seconds. That would be a 6:26 pace, or a full minute faster than my training pace. Which is a comfort, I suppose, given that my joints and bones feel like they’ve been hammered pretty good lately, and given my dismal performance in last Sunday’s 17 km long run. Still, even though I continue to train, the little nagging injuries are healing anyway. I floated about in the pool after. I played around with a little karate, mainly kicks, in the pool. I got the idea when I remembered water jogging. It was interesting and might be useful some day if I ever need it. It feels like I’m 40 pounds lighter in the pool so I can kick a lot higher. Then I went into the hot pools and placed my sore … Continue reading

Karate 37

Well, yesterday’s class was pretty routine. We practiced basics again and katas. I can feel that I am improving, but I’ve been so busy lately I have not had time to practice. I met a new student today, a friend of Chris who also is named Chris I think, and he has taken Tai Quan Do before. Tae Quan Do. Tae Kwon Do. There are so many ways to spell it. Which is right? Other than that I don’t have a lot to say about yesterday’s class except that I always manage to learn something new and notice something old that needs tweaking. Can I have new joints now? It’s pretty frustrating when your form looks really bad because you are avoiding pain so you step funny. It makes you look like you don’t care and are just going through the motions. Maybe I shouldn’t be taking karate AND training … Continue reading
