Bear Tossing For Dummies
We were sitting around talking about units of measurement and converting kilometres to miles and so on. Then the conversation somehow digressed to how they used to use the length of body parts (usually a king’s) as a standard of length. For example, an inch was the length of a thumb, and so on, which was not altogether very accurate since no one’s thumb was the same length, and the king complained bitterly that he was getting terribly tired going from village to village and market to market holding his thumb out for lowly and often smelly peasants to measure. I then recounted a story about the pioneers, frontiersman, and explorers who first ventured forth into the wild west and how they had no rulers or measuring tapes back then so they had to use innovative ways to create maps. Since there were an awful lot of grizzly bears on … Continue reading

Run 49, 2008
The Excuse Amnesty Run. A nice little flick to which I was invited by Karen Cooksley in a virtual way. A total disaster. OK, so I did not run yesterday because I had to work some weird hours. So I ran today. I really did not want to run today so it is just a coincidence that I found myself running on a day when I was supposed to go bear tossing with friends. Anyway, I didn’t get out of bed until late morning and it was high noon before I got started. Our driveway is shaded by trees on both sides for the first 50 feet and so I stood in that shady tunnel looking out onto the smoking hot prairie. It was a blistering 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees F for you ‘mericans). I thought I would die from the heat. I just stood there for 5 minutes … Continue reading

Karate 44
Today’s karate lesson consisted of more basic practicing our kumites and yakushoku. It was a small class, kind of quiet and relaxed even. It’s good since we need to practice the same things again and again a million times before we can do hope to do it properly. In that sense we didn’t learn anything new today. That’s about it really…

Run 48, 2008
I didn’t sleep very well last night so it was with great reluctance that I got up at 7 AM and headed out for my 17 km run. Also, it was quite chilly (8 degrees C), with overcast rain clouds and wind. Luckily, I did not get rained on during the run though. I met a friend of Marilyn’s at the bird sanctuary and I stopped to talk to him for about 5 minutes. I should have stopped my stopwatch but I didn’t. Also I had to make use of the outhouse on my 3rd lap. In spite of those delays I still managed to post a time of 2:11:52 for a 7:45 pace. Of course, if I subtract the time I stopped to chat I ran faster than my goal pace. So much for the start of my “rest” week. By the way, how’s this for a taste treat: … Continue reading

Run 47, 2008
Another 8 km bites the dust today as I tried to slow down a bit, doing the 8 km in 57:47 for a 7:13 pace. I wore my heart rate monitor today for the first time in like, forever and it was too difficult for me to get an accurate average heart rate. But I tried to keep my heart rate down below150, I think my average best guess is somewhere between 145 and 155. Maybe some day I can get me a fancy electronic gizmo that will give me all the gory details. Of course every time I try to drink I can’t breathe and my heart rate consequently goes up much higher; it goes up when I climb even a moderate hill; and goes down when I run downhill or on the flat. My heart rate soars when I first start up before I am warmed up, then … Continue reading

Some thoughts about running…
Dawn on the run is helping others to run by running Running Clinics. Sorry, I could not resist that, ha ha. She had asked “Why did you sign up for the clinic?”, “Why do you run?”, and “So what’s your excuse?” That got me to thinking about these things and I had to ask myself why as well. I have never signed up for a clinic so I could not answer that. So why do I run? There are many reasons. Here are some from the perspective of an old geezer who didn’t begin running until his early 50′s. (I am now 55 years old). 1. It’s really cool to be able to be 5, 10, or more km away from where you are now on your own power! 2. If I run out of gas 4 km from town, I now think nothing of saying “no problem, I’ll just … Continue reading

Run 46, 2008
Another good run today and a PR too as I ran on the indoor track 8 km in 49:20 for a 6:10 pace. I am a little disappointed to fall short of my 6 minute goal but still happy to have run so quickly. My plan was to really push myself today in an effort to improve…well…everything, speed, endurance, and oxygen capacity. I think I succeeded. That would mean I can run a 10 km in 61 minutes and 40 seconds! I haven’t but I’m sure going to try except my ultimate goal is to run a 10 km in under an hour. I will succeed. This year. It’s not really fast compared to younger runners, but it’s pretty respectable for a 55 year old geezer like me! By the way my VO2 max as calculated using THIS LINK and today’s data is 30.7 which is a joke. According to … Continue reading
