Run 54, 2008

Today’s run started at 9:50 AM and I knew it was supposed to last a good 3 hours which would put me into the hottest part of the day. I could say I was extremely lazy and did not get out of bed early enough, but no! The real reason, *ahem* was that I deliberately started late in order to acclimatize myself to the heat of summertime running. Ya, that’s it. That way I won’t feel too hot for my August marathon.

I did well, then again, I did not do so well in my run. My pace is supposed to be 7:30 over that distance, but it was 8:07 and took me 3:39:22 to run it. I’m not happy about being so slow.

On the other hand I am happy that I finished as fast as I did, I actually expected much worse. I just finished running an intense 12.4 km trail race in Devon on Saturday. I was too sore to do my 27 km long run on Sunday as scheduled, and my allergies were the worst ever during that 5peaks trail race. I tried another type of allergy over the counter medicine and that seems to be improving the situation.

And then there are the hills. I admit I suck big time at hills. There were killer hills in the trail race, and even on the road for today’s run there are two huge hills (there and back again at the Highway 60 bridge across the North Saskatchewan River), each about a kilometer and a half long. Going downhill, it’s “weeee!” and I gain about a minute per kilometer faster, but then I lose it all on the climb back up.

Marilyn came to my rescue again, delivering me a refill on my Gatorade. Today is the first time I took electrolyte pills with me, and also I had a Powerbar on route. I definitely did not have a negative split this time as the halfway mark found me at 1 hour and 44 minutes. I took a lot of walks breaks (for me) in the second half and I walked the last 2 kilometers home.

And that’s my story. Now to rest up for a few days.
