Run 58, 2008

I knew this morning was going to be the start of a heat wave so I got up at 4:30 AM intending to head out at 7 AM. The day before, Marilyn and I measured out the 15 km course on our bicycles. We put on about 27 km on our bikes. I tried to take it easy because I just ran 11 km the day before and I knew I would have a tough day today.

And I did have a tough day. I headed out a half hour earlier at 6:30 AM and I intended to try to stay at an 8 minute pace. The road went on forever it seemed, and the sun beat down on the asphalt with no shade whatsoever. I rustled up a coyote when I crossed a country road bridge, just before Graminea School. At the 15 km mark I turned around and headed home on the same track. I was doing quite well, even gaining about 2 minutes so I must have been speeding up to a 7:something pace. Until I hit the 20 km mark when it all began to fall apart. I began losing time, and at the 23 km point I ran out of sports drink in my hydration pack. I guess I short-changed myself by about 400 ml. And at the 24 km mark I was 2 minutes behind. I called Marilyn to bring me more water and she did that when I had 4 km to go. But I had to take a lot of walk breaks starting at the 25 km point, and by the time I had 4 km left to go, I had to hobble/walk home the rest of the way.

I don’t know what destroyed me, but next time I will try a slightly slower pace to start out with, so that I can try to achieve a negative split and have some running left in me when I am almost to the finish line. I did take a lot of electrolyte pills and I am sure they helped. I think next time will be better, since I learned a lot this time. I have never run this far before. Some of the things I learned today are: Bring more fluids, taking electrolyte capsules helps, start out slower, and maybe dangle a wet towel around my neck. And don’t wear those stupid toe socks. I tried out a pair that look like gloves on your feet. I got them as part of my 5Peaks race package. I developed a bad hot spot, but no blisters.

And so it goes…it’s bloody hard work training for a marathon…
