Allergies…or Bubonic Plague?
Only your medicine man knows for sure…yes I am writing this post to let you all know that I went to town today to change my allergy medication (all over the counter, not prescription). I took one at 5 PM today and hope that it will do the trick. I changed from a Reactine type product (chemical Citirizine Hydrochloride to some other chemical concoction that starts with an “L” plus a decongestant. I don’t know really if it is a cold, or a severe air quality allergic reaction I am having but what I do know for sure is that I am more sensitive to air quality and definitely have minor allergies to dust and pollen and whatever (or had/have minor allergies). I have to tell you I am getting pretty fed up with the sickness thing, because it just isn’t my style.

Karate 46
After my race Saturday morning in Devon I rushed off to join a Kobudo class in Devon. There were just brown, black, and higher belts there so Marilyn (the only lonely orange belt) was happy to see me. She gave me my Tonfa sticks (which I irreverently refer to as “tofu sticks”) and I tried to catch up as best I could. The handles are a bit loose and I have to glue them up a bit. The 2 hours I missed were all about the Bo, which is a wooden staff. Anyway, I was very warmed up when I joined the class and so had no problem doing push ups. You see, if anyone dropped their Tonfa, the punishment was that you had to do push ups. It is an incentive to grip your weapon properly and not drop it. I dropped mine about three times. But I wasn’t … Continue reading

Run 53, 2008
Prelude: This run is happening tomorrow and is a 5peaks race event in Devon, Alberta. Start time is 10 AM and the weather promises to be quite cool and partly sunny. I have not done anything in the way of a running workout since my 24 km last Sunday except for a 26 km bike ride Monday and a Karate class on Tuesday. Yesterday and today I am very much bothered by what I assume to be allergies and I have taken a Reactine – type product to minimize the symptoms. Today I have a pretty sore throat which is due partly to the allergies and partly to excessive snoring during sleep which was aggravated by the allergies. I sometimes but not always have unspecified allergies due to air quality problems such as pollen, dust, etc. I notice it more as I get older. So tomorrow I am up at … Continue reading

Another 26 km bike trip today…
Marilyn and I (on her suggestion) headed out for a bike ride to Devon today. Since I ran the same 24 km route yesterday I wasn’t sure I could handle it but I managed nicely! So we decided to measure out my 27 km run due next Sunday and I marked where the 13.5 km turn around point would be for me. After that we were free to go where we wanted since distance no longer mattered. After the 13.5 km was marked out, we headed to the Devon hospital so I could deposit some test samples I took for a routine physical. We also stopped and had the lunch we carried with us. It was a pleasant ride and not too strenuous for me although the last hill Marilyn maxed out on and had to rest a bit. Actually, I probably will not do the 27 km long run … Continue reading

Run 52, 2008
I ran 24 km today with a 7:28 pace. It was a cool and overcast day but no rain until my last 2 km and then only a sprinkle. I went along the highways today into Devon 12 km then turned around and came back. So yes, I did tackle two killer hill across the Devon bridge. Going down was fun and my pace was good, but going up I had to slow down a lot. I am happy that I still managed to maintain my goal pace over this distance especially the hills which I am not used to. But I am just a wee bit disappointed it wasn’t a just a little bit faster. Next week is a 27 km run so I’d better rest up!

Karate 45
Yes, I got in another lesson but there really isn’t much I want to say about it as I am suffering from burnout and don’t really feel like writing. It was good and I am getting better. Next Saturday I have a race to attend so I will miss the first two hours of a special 5 hour weapons class (Kobudo). We will be using the Bo and the Tonfa. Classes are drawing to a close for the summer and we are trying to decide how to handle summer classes if any are offered.

A biking we will go…
I chose to rest up from road pounding today and not run, so I hopped on my bike and mapped out a route for my next long run on Sunday which is to be 24 km. So I rode to Devon. For some stupid reason I had a huge lapse of focus and I only went 11 km, thinking that’s where I would turn around. By the time I realized my mistake I was already halfway back home. So tomorrow I am going to add on one more km to the turn around point and I should be ready to go for Sunday. Part of the reason I guess was that it was so much fun to be back on a bike again. I couldn’t help but detour extensively and go down into the Lion’s Campground to try that insanely killer hill again. Of course there were two other hills … Continue reading
