So now what…?
I have been considering my options since my last failed attempt at a 32 km training run. It was supposed to be my last long run before my taper. After that the taper was to be 23 km this Sunday, 17 km next Sunday, then the following Sunday is the 42.2 km marathon August 17th. I definitely overdid it at karate in terms of knee/quad work and this did contribute to my failed attempt last Wednesday. But that isn’t the whole story. I am sure many factors resulted in my knees acting up and I can’t begin to list them all. I do know that my knees have been good for a couple of years now, and so has my arthritic big toe. Apart from my calf injury last fall it has been a good number of months, even years, of running. The question now is, given that my marathon … Continue reading

Run 66, 2008
I was supposed to run 32 km this morning and headed out a half hour late at 6:30 AM. Actually I was supposed to run it last Sunday but could not because we went to a wedding in Saskatoon and did not get back until about 10 PM Sunday night. Monday I was too bagged from the drive, and Tuesday night was karate so I could not run Tuesday. That means I had to run today or not at all since there is karate Thursday night as well and my taper is supposed to start next Sunday. In spite of my best efforts I encountered heavy resistance today and had to be extracted after only 15 km. After a great start and although I felt strong, my knees suddenly started swelling up after the 9.5 km mark. The rain and cold were not helping. So I slowed down, stretched out … Continue reading

Karate 53
Only 5 people showed up today including me. We practiced Bo Kata. Our Bo’s are pretty heavy so my arms are sore from swinging it around all night. I’ll probably add more notes later, but right now I’m off to bed since I have to get up at 4 AM tomorrow in order to run 32 km. –It’s now 5:43 AM, a few minutes before sunrise. Help me I have gone completely insane. Why else would I ignore every whiff of common sense and go out in this cold and wet rainy weather at 6 AM to run 32 km to and around Devon and back? It’s supposed to be raining for my entire run. I want to give up and go back to sleep. This isn’t fun anymore. But you watch, when I get back I’ll be writing about what a great run I had…

Plate Tectonics of the Universe…
Yeah! More weird stuff! OK. Here we go. This is a post about what the cosmologists and physicists will eventually discover. Analogous to the Earth’s plate tectonics theory, here is how the universe works: Space-time is made up of many “tectonic” space-time plates which drift around the universe and have subduction zones and zones in which new space is created. Black holes are the subduction zones of the universe and the stars are the volcanic areas. When matter is “subducted” into black holes, matter and space and time are swallowed up. To replace this missing mass, energy, and time, it re-emerges from “singularities” at the center of stars. Some “singularities” (the star cores, not “singularity” in the strict physics definition) eventually move away from the upwelling “black hole magma” and simply die out and become relics like neutron stars, white dwarfs, etc., while others explode into super novas for various … Continue reading

Karate 52
Tonight’s weapons class in Devon was all about Tonfa. Tonfa originated in Africa when local tribesmen discovered a way to defend themselves against the dreaded Tonfa beast which…OK OK I’m kidding. Our Sensei relates that Tonfa were the removable and portable handles which were inserted into large grain grinding stones in order to turn the stones. The stones were safe from theft by virtue of their size and weight, but the handles were likely to disappear if one did not remove them. The Samurai did not allow the Okinawan peasant farmers to carry weapons. Therefore the farmers who developed the defensive martial art of karate, or “the way of the empty hand”, found ways to use the everyday tools as weapons. OK, so I’m not an expert in that kind of history. Look it up yourself, then. I know I didn’t. But I will, trust me on that one. Anywhoooo…we … Continue reading

Run 65, 2008
What am I, crazy? Why, yes I am, thank you for asking. Another 24 km today at goal pace took me 3:11:21 for a 7:58 pace. I was up at 4:30 AM, had two toast with almond butter, a power bar, and two cups of coffee. That combo seems to work well for me for my long runs. It lets me escape the heat and primes me for the actual marathon which I think has a 7 AM start time. I strapped on my hydration pack and I headed out the door at 6 AM. I was still very sore from karate (and my previous runs) but I bit the bullet and ran anyway. I just fell behind in the healing department for a couple of weeks, and I don’t get a chance to heal up properly between workouts. This week should do the trick though since it is a … Continue reading

Run 64, 2008
In spite of the fact that I trashed my quads doing karate last night I went out and ran an 11 km anyway in 1:19:37 for a 7:14 pace. I got serious nipple burn again. I did not expect it, but I guess it must have been the heat or something. I don’t usually need band aids on my nipples unless I am doing a long run. There are so many variables such as the abrasiveness of your shirt, the heat, the sweat…there’s nothing like the pain of salty sweat on bleeding nipples… I’ll know better next time. I did not wear my new shoes today since I was only doing 11 km. But I will for Sundays 24 km long run. My quads are hurting real bad, just above the knee attachment. It’s a mixed blessing really, since it means that after I heal they will be that much … Continue reading
