Run 59, 2008

I am fighting tooth and claw to stay on track here… I am Tooth, and with my wife, Claw we are wondering what the hell is going on?

I failed in my bid to run 24 km today, running only 21 km in 2:50:25 for an 8:06 pace. As you might recall, last week I also had trouble running my 30 km, having to walk the last 4 km. This year has been really weird for me in terms of being bothered by a number of back to back intense bouts of cold/flu plus some strange allergic reactions to the local air quality. All in all it’s been a pretty tough grind trying to stay on track training for my marathon. After a week off, today’s run was no exception.

But I think it is for a different reason this time. I have a feeling that the cushioning in my shoes is worn out very much prematurely after only 399 kilometers! Not only did I quit running after 21 km, but I refused to walk another step, calling Marilyn to come pick me up. My very bones are sore and my feet are killing me. I am, in fact, in a considerable amount of pain.

After discussing with MM whether I should try some gel inserts before my next 32 km run, we decided to just buy a new pair and see how it goes. I am scheduled to run 11 km on Wednesday and Friday, and 32 km on Sunday. If these runs are not much better than today (with my new yet-to be-bought shoes) then I feel I should give up my dreams of running a marathon this year and dumb it down to just a half marathon.

I have to say that for the first time in my personal history that I can remember, my confidence in my ability to do something, to see something through to it’s completion, has been shaken pretty badly. In this case it is my ability to run a marathon within the allotted time of less than 6 hours. Guess I’ll have to kick my own ass, because if I’ve learned anything, it’s that the time to shine is when you find yourself in your darkest hour. Anything less would be…ordinary.
