Run 66, 2008

I was supposed to run 32 km this morning and headed out a half hour late at 6:30 AM. Actually I was supposed to run it last Sunday but could not because we went to a wedding in Saskatoon and did not get back until about 10 PM Sunday night. Monday I was too bagged from the drive, and Tuesday night was karate so I could not run Tuesday. That means I had to run today or not at all since there is karate Thursday night as well and my taper is supposed to start next Sunday.

In spite of my best efforts I encountered heavy resistance today and had to be extracted after only 15 km. After a great start and although I felt strong, my knees suddenly started swelling up after the 9.5 km mark. The rain and cold were not helping. So I slowed down, stretched out and that seemed to help. But the problem came back, and I ended up calling it quits. My body feels pretty mangled all over. I can’t explain it.

So chalk this one up as a failure. With my marathon training schedule in a total shambles, I don’t know what I am going to do next. I have no idea how to handle the taper. I will still run the marathon though, that’s a given no matter what and whether I fail or not, at least I’ll have showed up and tried.
