Karate 56

Last Tuesday’s class in Devon was interesting for a number of reasons. As orange belts, we know we are pathetic and only vaguely know our Kata and our basics. We know some of the theory behind the moves, but we are still unclear as to how to accomplish them. Part of the reason for our difficulty comes from lack of muscle strength. Holding a stance and moving through a series of stances in Kata is impossible if you lack the strength or if you have joint problems even if you know how to do them.

You might ask how hard can it be to do the cat stance? Actually, we can hold a perfect cat stance but it takes us 3 minutes to get into it and we can do it only once because we are exhausted by the time we get there. And we can only hold it for 30 seconds. Then we are done. I may be exaggerating here to make a point. But not by much. Getting into and out of a cat stance in a fluid and perfect way is a whole different ball game. We still are not sure if our shoulders should be directly over our hips or not.

We’ve got a long way to go before we can even think about grading to green. Another problem is that we are not good enough or consistent enough in our simple stances to get through a Kata and end up in the same place we started.

There is a whole universe we need to polish. A black belt can make a Kata look easy. But when we do it we don’t breath properly, we are too tense and so we waste a lot of energy, we don’t walk a straight line, and we look like a bunch of rug rats trying our first baby steps.

I will skip tonight’s class to prepare and rest up for my marathon on Sunday. Tomorrow I am working downtown and will be picking up my race package.

One day we will get there. But not today.
