Run 93, 2008
Another 11 km today in 1:17:57 FOR A 7:05 pace happened in terrific weather. I am loving this “winter” since it is so dry and warm and has not “precipitated” for three months already. I am also happy that my knee has not hurt me yet. I am also quite surprised at this fact. I am wondering now if it is because I am wearing knee tensors, or if it is because I have switched permanently to my “new” (less than 100 km on them) shoes and retired my old ones (which only had about 650 km on them). My old ones are coming apart in the outside of the left foot. The sole on the bottom has peeled away a little just behind where my little toe is. Anyway, again I wanted to go slower than what I did but since there was no trace of what has been … Continue reading

Karate 73
This morning’s class was OK but it started late because the doors were locked and the key fobs did not work. Someone fixed it and we got started a half hour late. We did warm ups then stretched then practiced the x pattern with blocks and punches. We practiced walking from one stance to another without bobbing our heads up and down of course. Then we did kata and finally some sparring technique practice. No one seems sure of when the grading will take place, it may be moved ahead or farther back by a week depending on the school’s schedule. I don’t really care one way or the other.

Run 92, 2008
Today I decided I would try to run again, but slower. I also decided to wear my newer runners. And of course I wore my wrap around tensor knee braces. These are just some sort of thick black stretchy fabric with velcro closures. Anyway, I started out slow because I had promised myself to until I healed up more. It turned out better than I hoped. Although I was pretty nervous and pessimistic (I refused to look at my timer as much), I found I was running a 7 minute pace when I checked at the 2 km point. I backed off a little, or so I thought, until I came out of the woods and back onto the road with 4 km to go. I battled really hard not to run faster, fearing if I did my knee would crap out again. But with the end in sight I … Continue reading

Karate 72
Last Tuesday’s class had us practicing kicking, walking, blocking, and punching. We did kata in the second hour. I am better at remembering which of the 12 kihon kata are which by number. My knee is still pretty flaky so my turns are not what they could be. Nevertheless I am seeing a lot of improvement in my skill set, maybe even enough to advance one grade in a couple of weeks from now. I asked about the hip movements and was told that at least for the grading concentrate on just getting it right and try not to worry about torquing the hips into it because at my level it is not a requirement. Better not to try to do something beyond my requirements at the grading. Makes sense really. I can get those hips moving after the grading.

Remembering the past.
This post was inspired by a new friend I made on Facebook who posted that she misses her father. It reminded me of one of our neighbors whose son was killed in a motorcycle accident. It honestly creeps me out a little because, although I sincerely sympathize with the senseless loss of a promising and no doubt loved young adult in a motorcycle accident, there is a limit to the mourning period. It creeps me out because I see that a huge cross commemorating the deceased son is still on the front drive with fresh flowers all the time. I have also seen what I assume to be a parent hovering around the cross drinking beer and looking really sad. There’s nothing wrong with this. Unless this behavior is well into it’s third year which I think this is. I do sympathize; the loss must be very painful for the … Continue reading

Run 91, 2008
After almost three weeks without running (my last run was Nov. 2nd, 2008), I thought, holy crap! That’s enough time to heal an elephant, so I had to go out and test my knee again. Of course, it was dark when I went out so I strapped on my headlamp and toque, and off I went 4.5 km to the trail head then 2.5 km of in the dark trails. I have to tell you I don’t much like running in the dark even with a headlamp. And since there is no snow, it’s even darker. But the stars were cool. I can begin to appreciate how much “fun” Sarah had in the last leg of the Death Race last summer. Anyway I was very disappointed in that my knee/IT band problem came back again right where it left off three weeks ago. So I am at a loss. Well, … Continue reading

Karate 71
I dragged myself out of bed this morning thinking, “maybe I really am getting old.” Or maybe it’s just the fact that I have been fighting off a virus for the last two weeks. In truth, lots of aches and pains. I don’t heal as fast as I used to, and I have incurable and chronic injuries which in spite of great care and a heap of scorn thrown in, act up from time to time. But I laugh at them. Ha ha. See? I haven’t run for at least two weeks due to my knee or IT band problem because I wanted to give them a chance to really heal up after having run well over a thousand km this year. I am taking care to wear my tensor braces on my knees for class to avoid any strain on them. But I’m not sure since I am too … Continue reading
