Karate 71

I dragged myself out of bed this morning thinking, “maybe I really am getting old.” Or maybe it’s just the fact that I have been fighting off a virus for the last two weeks.

In truth, lots of aches and pains. I don’t heal as fast as I used to, and I have incurable and chronic injuries which in spite of great care and a heap of scorn thrown in, act up from time to time. But I laugh at them. Ha ha. See?

I haven’t run for at least two weeks due to my knee or IT band problem because I wanted to give them a chance to really heal up after having run well over a thousand km this year. I am taking care to wear my tensor braces on my knees for class to avoid any strain on them. But I’m not sure since I am too lazy to open up my training spreadsheet and look at it even though it’s only a few mouse clicks away. Oh hell, if you insist! … HOLY CRAP! My last run was Nov. 2nd! That’s THREE WEEKS AGO! What a frikken loser I am!

Tomorrow I am getting back out on the road come hell or high water or both.

Today we had the pleasure of practicing the 5 techniques of blocking. They all have names, but since Sensei Baller didn’t give us a manual I haven’t got a clue what they are. I only remember some of them, vaguely. Oops, they’re gone. Oh well. Whatdda ya expect from a stinkin orange belt?

Then we did kata then sparring. Speaking of sparring, I notice that MM is getting – heck she IS very good at sparring. She’s pretty vicious and deadly accurate. (Of course I mean to say for our level of training). She is going to be really good in time.

It’s interesting how very obvious it is to see who is better than who. Sensei Tony Baller is so much better than certain other people who are brothers. It’s easy to tell that he could smoke both at the same time if he wanted to. You don’t know who I’m talking about, but I’ll remember if I ever read this again. Let’s just say they are a pair of extremely talented, but young karateka who show up at almost every class and their last name begins with M and ends with olina.

I think that’s pretty cool: To see someone so much better than you are in relation to someone who is so much better than they are.

Life goes on, but will I? You bet I will.

Did I just see on Facebook that you went for a 7 km run? With bad legs? In the Canadian November cold? I applaud you for your tenacity. And I chastise you for your bull-headedness. Your legs and your feet are your most precious commodity. Cross training is a good thing. Trust me. I was out for a year with injuries.

And don’t think for one second that I didn’t long to run every single minute of every single day. ;-)

  2. Oooo! I think that helps. No, really. You actually were out for a whole year? Wow! And I can certainly understand the feeling of not being able to run while longing to run every single minute of every single day.

I just want to cry like a big baby, and whine a lot, feeling sorry for myself. I keep thinking that it’s the end of the line for me because of my age. And that’s something I can’t accept. I actually didn’t run for a whole three weeks, which is a lifetime for me. So I thought I would test it out tonight and it still let me down after only 6 km. I don’t know what to do about it. I am waiting for an MRI appointment to be made for me to look at that knee. I am really afraid that the doctor will say don’t run any more.

I can still do karate no problems. I just can’t run like I have been able to. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t given up. I am just in psychological agony wondering when I can run with full effort again.

    Thanks for your comment.

By the way, the 5 aspects of blocking were named for us in Japanese which is why I can’t remember their names. I now remember 4 of them: Blocking with intent to attack (block IS the attack, very hard and bone-breaking), Soft (redirecting the attack), Get out of the way of the line of attack, and reading your opponents intent (which is the hardest of the 5). The 5th I can’t remember right now.
