Run 101, 2008

The run was to be 6 km. The pace was to be 5:50 or better. The place was…the arctic. The weather was -20 C and there was a mini blizzard happening with snow. The wind was re-arranging the environment, blasting down in shards of ice crystals cutting into my flesh, mixed with snow. I got out there. I bit the wind. The wind chill was not going to let me win this one. I could barely breathe as I nosed my way into the wind. It was frostbite time. At the end of 1 km I decided to check my time and abort if I did not make it. I checked the time. The time was 6:47 for one kilometer. I had had enough. I headed back home. So this is it. My last run of 2008 ended up being only 2 km. This year I met some of my … Continue reading

Run 100, 2008

Well, I ran 11 km in 1:19:06 fro a 7:12 pace. At the start I wasn’t sure I would make it because of my wonky left knee. Then again, the same thoughts near the end of the run. It was pretty hard running the trail portion because of the snow. I honestly don’t know if I will be able to continue long distance racing, but I think I can do short races of 10 km or less. I really have no clue what the immediate future holds. Will I have to cease running like I do? I will have to see the results of my MRI at the end of January. I will try to use all possible options to recover or deal with this nagging problem so that I can continue to run. But, like I said, I have no clue right now. I have to wait. Meanwhile, I … Continue reading

An edible gift to you for the holidays!

This is not my recipe. I got the idea from a wine tasting put on by a local wine shop. These tasty morsels go great with your favorite nice white wine. See the pictures below to see the process and what they look like. The ingredients are simple. You need good quality seedless grapes of whatever variety you choose. I chose these dark blue grapes. You also need goat cheese. And you need pistachio nuts. I chose to make half of my batch with cashews. The first thing you need is cleanliness. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly and don’t re-contaminate them by doing something thoughtless like rubbing your eyes, nose or whatever. Make sure your fingernails are clean too. Of course, all surfaces and tools should also be…clean. Duh. Each individual grape should be cleaned and dry. For each grape, you need approximately an equal or slightly larger … Continue reading

Solstice 2008 has come and gone!

I will soon be posting the latest picture of the solstice sun. Every year, I hope to do it as sort of an annual ritual. Now you will all know how high the sun gets over the Edmonton horizon at high noon on the shortest day of the year! The answer is: Not very. You can just about slip a piece of paper between the bottom of the sun and the horizon. OK, it’s a really thick piece of paper. Don’t try this at home; I’m a professional. Pictures will be posted in this post soon, but right now I am too bagged from working all day hanging a big screen LCD TV in somebody’s house who can afford one, in Sherwood Park, and then installing a network printer, in Spruce Grove. I would have fixed a networking issue in Stony Plain at the same time but unfortunately they were … Continue reading

Run 99, 2008

I was going to go out today but decided against it because it was -27 C and I just couldn’t face that. So I decided on an equivalent distance on the treadmill. I ran at a 7:27 pace but I could not finish the whole 11 km. I managed to stick it out for 7.5 km though. I did not have even the slightest amount of fun. I felt terrible. It hurt a lot. On the other hand, I was chased by absolutely NO dogs. Sometimes you just want to give it all up and eat yourself to death…

Run 98, 2008

After a week’s break and some healing time since my last run I did another indoor track run today. I decided to increase my speed run by 10 per cent so I did 5.5 km in 31:37 for a 5:45 pace, which is exactly the same pace of my last speed run. I am going to leave Wednesday’s speed run at that for a few weeks and see what happens. Next run is Friday and will be an 11 km training run. I’m still looking for a marathon to begin training for because I can’t decide which one I can do. Holidays are always a busy time so we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks I guess.

Karate 77

This is the last class for this year, at least in our local dojo. Actually there may be one more class on Saturday depending on the Christmas rush and whether or not an instructor can come out to class. If there is one we will be contacted and we will go – otherwise, tonight is the last class in Devon for this year. It was a fun class, where we practiced some kata and kumite then during the break we got into an informal basketball game and got a real workout running back and forth. It was a lot of fun. Now I am looking forward to tomorrow when I get to run on the indoor track again. This time I am running the same 5 km speed run, but after the 5 km I will be adding a few more slow laps. I haven’t decided how many more laps … Continue reading
