Karate 101

Karate 101 sounds funny, like some sort of University class. Sensei Mario was awarded his Godan. That, I believe, is 5th Dan. As for me and Marilyn, well we did our best not to get smoked by the heat! I mean the warm up was pretty routine, but then after a bazillion katas, we sparred and I know for a fact that I don’t spar well. I’m just too slow. Sure, I was sparring against black belts but I know that even if I had my black belt I would get smoked in any real fight. Oh well. Maybe this is one of those rare moments when I’m feeling my age, but I’ve been training really hard to the point where I am in danger of over-training.

Run 40, 2009

I bit off more than I could chew yesterday. It was supposed to be a 24 km run but I cut it short at 10 km. Can’t win them all! Biking never happened today either. But I did sleep.

Logging into my online RunKeeper account I see that today’s run was not lost; that most of it was mapped but the distance was actually 11 km so something got messed up somewhere. What happened was that I wanted to check some stats out during the run and when I pulled my iPhone out of its holder I accidentally unlocked and stopped it. That can be fixed by locking the screen rather than keeping the screen active. … Continue reading

Karate 100

Yes folks, to the best of my knowledge and dependent on my record keeping skills, today was my one hundredth class. Today’s class was mostly about kata. Having decided that my Zenkutsu Dachi stance was not good, today I tried to step into it properly and succeeded to a great degree, but it takes a lot more strength which I did not have. I am getting better and have a more clearly defined set of mini goals to achieve. These mini goals include strengthening my stances. We spent a few minutes more on sparring techniques in the last 20 minutes of the class.
