Run 58, 2009 …are you having problems with unresolved injuries of mysterious origin?

Today’s run felt really good. I ran 11.15 kilometers at a 7:11 pace. I ran my usual route, over paced country roads plus 2.5 km of trail at the bird sanctuary. I have this muscle/tendon/ligament problem back of my left knee on the outside which I am sure has been the cause of my knee problems. Massaging that and working out those muscle knots really helped me. This is just a tip for other runners who have unresolved mysterious knee problems. I’ve been to doctors and have had an MRI done on that knee and they say it is normal, nothing seems to be wrong but often my knee pops or cracks, especially on trails or going up hill. That is only an annoyance and does not cause pain or anything other than worry. But my left knee is famous for getting kinks and pains which rapidly develop into full … Continue reading

Karate 118

Another great class was had today, but it was very small at only 6 people including Sensei Juan Molina. Ever since Juan began teaching us this summer we have been shown many varied techniques for training and practice that is tending to move us from a more static “just stand there and practice your basics” format to one that is much more dynamic and is starting to give me a feel for how one actually integrates multiple techniques in practice. It’s hard to explain, and I am sure that students who have been there longer than me are aware of these practice techniques. One of the things Juan has shown us is to do three kicks with the same leg without setting that leg down until you are finished. So we would do a front thrust kick, then a side kick, then a back kick one after the other without … Continue reading

Run 57, 2009

Today’s run was pretty much a desperation run done after work and it was pretty much a dismal failure. I managed to finish the 11.15 kilometer run unscathed but worn out from … I hate to say it … over training? Maybe I need a rest. I don’t know how to rest. I’m still at that fearful state of mind where if I slack off for even a day I think I will lose it all. I need to cope with that and find the best solution. And I need to do it now before I begin training for my next marathon and still be able to do the next trail race plus a half marathon in October (Thanksgiving). After that half marathon I need to think about how much time off I’m going to take before beginning my marathon training for my May 2010 marathon.

Karate 117

Again, I really did not feel like going to karate tonight. I felt too tired and worn out from the heat and the lingering heat of Saturday’s brutal 14.3 kilometer trail race. I whined and complained to Marilyn about maybe giving this one a miss and she just said – too bad so sad, suck it up – so I (we) did. I often feel that way just before a class and sometimes even a run but I always feel better after getting into it. I really appreciate these classes lately, Juan Molina is an excellent teacher. He is always teaching us new stuff and challenging us to be the best we can be. In spite of this he does not push us too hard, but his natural love of karate and of teaching us is quite apparent and inspires me, if not all of us, to really shine. Juan … Continue reading

Run 56, 2009 …5Peaks Trail Race Chickakoo…

Today’s race was a grueling 14.3 kilometers and my average pace was 8:37. I was up at 6 AM drinking coffee in order to make sure I was even more dehydrated . My race started at 9:15 AM and I had to wind my way through road construction and so I needed to leave early to make the 1 hour trip on time. Today’s race crowd was relatively large at 330 runners, including the Sports class (one lap 7 km) and my class Enduro (two laps at 14.3 kilometers). Unfortunately, more than 3 people showed up who were in my age class and so once again my evil plans to place and therefore gain a 5Peaks medal was foiled. Mark my words, though, one day no one will show up who is in my age category and then I’ll get that darned medal. Seriously though, today really was brutal. I … Continue reading

Karate 116

No weapons today in class but it was still an interesting one. I got quite a workout qhat with all the pushups and situps in their various forms plus a lengthy training session in kicks. Then we did a lot of kata, being continually corrected by Sensei Juan Molina who, because of the small class size was able to devote a lot of personal attention to each one of us. I’ve learned more during these summer classes than ever and I really like it. Next class is Monday.

Run 55, 2009 …more asphalt up my nose…

I did my 11 km run today using my new “Armpocket” which came in the mail yesterday. As you may recall, Dave or Alex (obviously I can’t recall and I’m too lazy to look it up, ha ha) from Tribal Running mentioned it in a post a couple of weeks back. I’ll be posting my review of this product in a later post. Since this was my first run with it I won’t say too much about it until I get to know it a little better. I will be posting my first impressions from my first run with it but I also want to post another one after I get more familiar with it. I plan on using it this Saturday at my 5Peaks trail race. Meanwhile all I’ll say right now is that I think it is a good product, and I’m not disappointed I bought it. I … Continue reading
