Run 76, 2009 …a windy and very cool 17.45 km

When I began running today I felt that I would run really poorly and I noted that I was slow at every checkpoint up to 7 km. I was feeling really lazy and lethargic and the wind was strong and cold at 13 degrees C. Beautiful day, though! I did my three trail loops along with my 8 km of road surface and somehow I managed to perk up a little around the 13 km mark and I ran well. Surprisingly, I managed to finish in almost the exact same time (less than a minute slower) as my last 17 km run. My average pace was 7:08 per km and I finished in 2:04:36. Last time I finished in 2:03:51. I’m not going to be running farther than that for my half marathon October 12th since I’ll have no problem running only an additional 4 km. I really hope to … Continue reading

Run 75, 2009 …running through an injury

Distance: 11.15 km Time: 1:14:46 Average Pace: 6:42 In spite of the neck injury I had a great run today. I felt really good, possible because the temperature was a cool 15 C so it was perfect for running. After the run I had a shower and headed for my neck physio. The running really helped to heat me up so my neck muscles were a lot warmer and easier to manipulate. Seems my entire upper back and rib cage needs to be freed up and loosened so I’ll have that worked on. The therapist gave me some additional stretches and exercises – one of which involves a foam roller aligned parallel to and on top of my spine to loosen that up. A lot of muscles peripheral to the neck itself have tightened up considerably to compensate for the pulled and over worked neck muscles. Those neck muscles are … Continue reading

Run 74, 2009 …post accident blues

I tried running today but it was too hot and my neck was too sore so I ended up walking a lot. But I did go 11 km in just over 1.5 hours, pretty slow. Now I’m off to physio for my first appointment.

A brief report on my car accident…

My Honda got totaled today, but I am OK. I was “parked” in a left turning zone, signaling a left turn to turn into an IGA parking lot in Edmonton when some guy in a white pickup truck rear ended me at high speed. He then backed up, and sped away, a hit and run. I and other witnesses got his license plate number and it was a company truck (I did not know this) that hit me so this guy is going to get caught if he hasn’t been already. The cops told me they had the business that owned the truck, and that it was a white Ford truck and would be paying them a visit. The cops also told me they think the guy driving it was driving with a suspended license too. I’m not quite sure how they know all this, I don’t know much yet. … Continue reading

Run 73, 2009 …beware of the leopard!

My running odometer has just turned 1021 km so far this year. It looks like I might beat the 1000 mile mark if I keep this up. Yes, 17 k on a sunny d. If you read that line you should probably be aware that it rhymes. Unless you are American and can’t say 17 “kay” you probably read it as “sunny dee”. It’s “sunny day” of course. But enough silly talk. When am I going to get to the boring details of my run? How about now. I ran 17.45 km in 2:03:51 for a 7:06 average pace. Which was kind of painful, but not enough to stop me. Which makes me think I might very well have a sub 2.5 hour half marathon in me. Or I might not. I met a whole whack of people today at the bird sanctuary where I did 3 – 3 km … Continue reading

Run 72, 2009 …the early bird gets the road, but what a lot of birds!

It was very refreshing running today in the early to mid morning coolness, especially after my last two runs, one of which I could not finish due to the extreme heat. I thought I’d be alone today but I met a couple of runners going the other way and a few more people taking photos on the trail so I guess being an early bird is a popular thing. I ran 1:38:08 for an average pace of 6:52 for 14.3 km. So it was a good run! I was almost cold this morning when I started out, but I warmed up quickly. It was a weird feeling with a hot core temperature combined with a chilling cold air. Eventually my temperature stabilized though and the chills went away.

Run 71, 2009 …heat wave, run waived…

I only got 8 km out of my planned 11 today due to my late start and the fact that it is too bloody hot. Thirty plus degrees and a strong desiccating wind meant that I had to be extracted 8 km into my run and I could not finish. Better luck next time.
