A brief report on my car accident…
My Honda got totaled today, but I am OK. I was “parked” in a left turning zone, signaling a left turn to turn into an IGA parking lot in Edmonton when some guy in a white pickup truck rear ended me at high speed. He then backed up, and sped away, a hit and run. I and other witnesses got his license plate number and it was a company truck (I did not know this) that hit me so this guy is going to get caught if he hasn’t been already. The cops told me they had the business that owned the truck, and that it was a white Ford truck and would be paying them a visit. The cops also told me they think the guy driving it was driving with a suspended license too. I’m not quite sure how they know all this, I don’t know much yet. I was stunned for an undetermined amount of time (probably seconds) after the impact. I remember looking up at my rear view mirror after hearing a truck roar and seeing this guy bearing down on me but I thought nothing of it and my attention returned to my left turn as I was waiting for a clear opening. After the impact I remember coming round and the strangest thought entered my head. I looked in the rear view mirror and thought (very confused) that the guy would be getting out of the truck to help me out and examine the damage, but the strange thought was this: I saw a piece of paper sitting on my passenger seat and said to myself I’d better grab a pen and write down his license plate number. So I remember getting my pen out of the driver’s door pocket and when I looked up again the guy was backing up, then he shot into the right lane and fled the scene northwards. All I could focus on with really squinty eagle eyes was his rear license plate number which I wrote down on that piece of paper. It’s like the only thing that existed in the entire universe was that license plate. Not only did I get it but a witness who stopped to help me also got the plate number and when I compared mine to his it was the same. I was told by the witness that another (green?) car took off in pursuit of this guy.
I can’t say for sure if it was a GUY. But I think it was, and he had a baseball cap on. I don’t know if there was a passenger but I don’t think there was one. The cops only want what I know for sure. So I told them a white truck and a license plate number. That’s all I told them. When they ran the plates they told me it was a Ford truck.
So the trunk is now a foot shorter, both rear doors are sprung and won’t close properly. The fenders are touching the rear tires. My car got moved at least 20 feet from a standstill. I am happy for two things, (a) I was wearing my seat belt, and (b) I had a neck rest or else my head would be on the floor of the car still.
As it is I just have a slight pain in the neck, a wee headache, and that’s it. But everyone has told me that I’ll feel it a lot more tomorrow. Guess we’ll see. I’ll deal with the insurance tomorrow.
