Run 81, 2009 …back from the dead.
OK so maybe I wasn’t quite dead, but as it is Halloween it sounds pretty cool. And also it’s just my second run since a 16 day rest following my half marathon. Eleven kilometers today brings my total to 1123 kilometers this year. I doubt if I’ll have time to make 1000 miles but we’ll see. Today was snow covered and around zero C, so winter running gear was in effect. The cold is pretty tough on us ZOMBIES! Anyway, Halloween is tomorrow, and my next run is Sunday so in honor of Halloween I will run like a Zombie and eat anyone I see. ZOMBIE RUN! BEWARE!!!

Karate 132
A new training regime has recently been introduced by Sensei Juan Molina in which we warm up by running, and other aerobic exercises which I quite like. It involves a bit of running around the gym for a few laps then changing direction and going the other way. The routine has us slow down to a walk and we kick our outstretched hands while walking. Then we run again, then stop and face the middle and do crunches, pushups, basic blocks, punches, and kicks, then we run in the other direction and repeat the process. We move on to kata, and sparring. I like the new dynamic as it adds variety and makes you stay alert and think.

Run 80, 2009
After a long holiday of 16 days I am back running again. Today’s run was 11 km. My last run was the Thanksgiving day half marathon in Devon, where I not only got off track and ran an extra 1.5 km for a total of about 22.5 but I also had the disappointing return of the knee from hell and had to limp home from km 10 or so. Sucks to be me. Wallowing in self pity now. I did finish that race but everyone had gone home, so there was no timing mat to run across, but I did get my shiny thing anyway. Sometimes, ya just gotta hate what life throws at you.

Running and karate update.
I won’t be updating this blog as frequently any more nor will I be continuing to count my karate lessons and runs. I will be posting runs and my cumulative running distances in a year will still be updated in my header. Posting will resume approximately whenever I feel like it. I have been sort of dutifully recording on this blog since I started it for technical reasons. I began this blog just so I could keep up with the technology and have been mindlessly posting, testing, and playing around with it. Changes might happen regarding the ability to access archives, in fact, I may remove everything and start over.

Karate 127
I managed to make it all the way through this karate class, but I almost didn’t for reasons unrelated to my neck. For some reason, probably because I’m old and crippled, my right forearm went into spasm about an hour and a quarter into the class. It felt like the forearm bone wanted to suddenly snap in half about halfway between my elbow and my wrist. Of course, that’s only what it felt like. I know from experience that it is not the bone itself that is about to break, it’s just some muscles in my arm that contracted and forgot to relax. I couldn’t shake it off and I couldn’t work the knots out of the muscles. It was so painful that I couldn’t do anything with it so my katas and other training went from crisp and well defined to limp. I could not do a low block … Continue reading

Run 78, 2009 …taper time, I guess…
Many of you already know this, but for those who don’t, it bears repeating here. The main purpose of a taper before a race is to allow you to rest up and heal from a hard training period. That way you are in your peak physical condition right at race time. If you think you’d rather get that last long run in here’s a little tip that I have read in various places: You won’t see any benefit from any training for at least two weeks. So if you have less than two weeks left before a race, don’t think that speed work or an extra fast long run will help you now, on the contrary it will just serve to delay your healing and possibly even be detrimental to your race day efforts. Hence, experience sports people invented the taper. Which is what I’m doing right now. I went … Continue reading

Karate 126
Yesterday was my first time back since the summer/fall break. I only managed to do one hour out of the two because my neck/shoulder muscles got tired too quickly and there was a danger that I delay my recovery if I pushed it too much. I am writing this from the perspective of the next day which lets me write about how surprised I am at how sore I am from that class, especially my hamstrings. It illustrates the fact that training is very muscle specific and my running did not help very much with the whole body and leg work that is needed in karate.
