Run 78, 2009 …taper time, I guess…

Many of you already know this, but for those who don’t, it bears repeating here. The main purpose of a taper before a race is to allow you to rest up and heal from a hard training period. That way you are in your peak physical condition right at race time. If you think you’d rather get that last long run in here’s a little tip that I have read in various places: You won’t see any benefit from any training for at least two weeks. So if you have less than two weeks left before a race, don’t think that speed work or an extra fast long run will help you now, on the contrary it will just serve to delay your healing and possibly even be detrimental to your race day efforts. Karate 126

Yesterday was my first time back since the summer/fall break. I only managed to do one hour out of the two because my neck/shoulder muscles got tired too quickly and there was a danger that I delay my recovery if I pushed it too much. I am writing this from the perspective of the next day which lets me write about how surprised I am at how sore I am from that class, especially my hamstrings. It illustrates the fact that training is very muscle specific and my running did not help very much with the whole body and leg work that is needed in karate.
