Run 90, 2009 …my tiredness exceeds the tiredness of the entire universe…

I am tired because I am too tired to be tired. Plus, I’m covered in tired sauce. It’s probably me fighting off some virus or something. Even though one is immune, it still takes a lot of energy to fight off an attack. Or maybe it’s the sauce, I don’t know. Anyway, I am more tired than the combined tiredness of the entire universe. I am infinitely tired, which logically means that there is no room for not being tired anymore. Are you getting tired of reading about my tiredness yet? Well, at least I did not get attacked by any dogs this time out. And another 11 km bites the dust. Although a starving Zombie shuffling along would have probably caught up with me and had me for lunch I was so slow. And being tired does something to my brain and my writing have you noticed? So anyway, … Continue reading

Declaring war on irresponsible dog owners.

I am fed up with being harassed and attacked by dogs while running on public roadways and in public recreation areas, and I am declaring total war. And you all should do the same. If you encounter an incident, you should stand your ground even if it means abandoning your run and call the local dog control officer right away from your cell phone and resolve the issue right there and then. Use whatever means you have handy (cell phone with camera and a phone number) to record the offending dog and the owner and the license plate number if the dog owner was driving. If the dog is alone, take photos. It’s important because unless you can positively absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt identify that dog, there is nothing anyone will or can do to help you. I know this from experience. If they ask you a … Continue reading

Run 89, 2009 …sigh! Yet another dog attack…will it never end?

Before I start on my rant, Allow me to point out that I’ve just corrected a counting error and this is Run 89 of 2009 (1211 total km this year so far). So I changed my last post title to reflect that. Anyway, today’s 11 km run was going mighty fine until I yet again was attacked by a stupid owner’s dog. I was just coming out of the wildlife sanctuary when I saw a truck pull up at the end of the trail (still about 4 km from home along country roads). The stupid owner jumped out of his truck and let his two dogs out, one of which immediately attacked me and bit me in the leg, tearing my pants (which now have a 6 inch rip in them) but fortunately not enough to break the skin. It was one of those stupid ugly little poodles owned by … Continue reading

Run 87, 2009 …relax, it’s only a run…

The topic of stretching is important and I hope others can post their experiences with it. Meanwhile, I have a few tips on running that I’d like to share. We know that muscles have to be fairly tense, or at least be able to respond quickly enough so that they become as tense as possible to help deal with the shock absorption that comes with a high impact activity like running. So we stretch, yet we want to be tense too. And tense is the opposite of relaxed, or is it? The key is to have tense muscles to help with the job of absorbing and dissipating the impact forces, however every other muscle not involved should be relaxed, right? Otherwise you are wasting energy. Why not save that energy so you can have that extra speed or distance at the end of your run? I’ll bet you look really … Continue reading

Run 86, 2009 …on the irrelevance of meeting a moose…

This post does mention a moose somewhere, and there is the word “irrelevance” in there somewhere too, but they have nothing to do with each other. It was just a catchy title. You can stop reading now. Up at 7:30 AM and out running this morning in -11 C temps to the trails for another 11 km. It was cold but the skies were absolutely crystal clear and the sliver (yes, sliver, not silver) moon just highlighted the amazing sunrise. Oh, and by the way I also saw a moose on the trail, but a few hundred meters away. Then I went to work. I’m fairly optimistic I can get that pesky knee problem under control with IT band stretching and also with careful post run stretching. So far so good. My flexibility is definitely improving thanks to my cross training. Having had moderate success, as in any endeavor I … Continue reading

Run 83, 2009 …Johnny New Shoes…

Well I retired my old pair and put 11 km on my new pair of Mizuno Waveriders. MY old pair had 1157 km on them, way beyond my normal 800 km switch out time. I have put in shock absorbing aftermarket insoles twice in an experiment to lengthen their useful life. It sort of worked because the framework did not come apart. Usually the rubber bits start peeling off and the uppers get holes in them long before the 1000 km mark but this time they held out so I thought I’d try to extend the cushioning by using the inserts. It worked for a while but it was time to switch to a new pair. I had no issues during this run. The knee held out. It was cold and windy but sunny. So I am really having a hard time deciding on my future runs. I am registered … Continue reading
