Run 97, 2010 …the phoenix and the ashes…
A light wind carrying shards of icy diamond needles stirs the ash amidst a chaotic twisted pavement of charcoal. Suddenly, punctuating an angry microsquall of irate wind, a translucent, scale-encrusted talon erupts from the fog of ash to reveal the rebirth of the crystalline and wintry phoenix. Having died in a fiery plummet, dashing itself to pieces upon the unforgiving earth, the scarlet summer phoenix is reborn to soar the wan gray skies of winter once again. And that, my friends, is me coming back after a long absence for reasons of personal loss. I shall not go into details, as we all suffer from this as human beings. That is my way of saying please do not ask. Suffice it to say that I am, indeed, back. Today is my first really wintry run outside and I have to say that I have mixed feelings about it. Already, I … Continue reading

Run 89, 2010 Devon Half Marathon
This was the 4th anniversary of this Running Room sponsored run and also the 4th time I have run it. It was called the Devon Turkey Chase. This race had been a curse for me the last three times I have run it and today was no exception although it was my best run so far of this doomed series. I say it is doomed because I will not run it again for reasons I shall explain later. Already crippled from the 5peaks trail half marathon September 25th followed by some brutal karate workouts, I rested up the last four days hoping to heal up in time for this, the last of my races for this season. I even sprung for a deep massage therapy session focusing on my calves and hamstrings. In spite of this I felt it wise to wrap some compression tubes around my calves for this … Continue reading

Your memories: Just who controls what?
Everyone knows about memory. Our brains store our memories for many obvious reasons. We rely on our memories to keep us out of trouble, and to recognize past patterns, whether those patterns are the familiar faces and actions of friends or enemies, or whether it is a set of instructions for avoiding death when dealing with potentially dangerous objects. So this is a message to those who are dwelling in the past, to those who cannot forgive, those who are wracked with guilt, and to those who have a penchant to act first then think later. Why are you letting your memories control your life? Memories are a tool. You are the one who is supposed to be in control, not the memory. If you let your memory take control, then every time you face the same old problems, you will allow your memory to present the same old solutions. … Continue reading

Run 3, 2010 …all the world’s a track…
All the world’s a track, And all the men and women merely runners: They have their exits and their entrances; And one runner in his time plays many parts… And so today I ran at the indoor track. I ran 6 laps for a warm up, then began my 44 lap 10 km time trial. My pace was 6:40 per kilometer so I ran it in 1:06:36. In all I did 11.36 (50 laps) km today. Then I walked a few extra laps for a cool down. Did my stretches and some push ups after. Then I went to the pool where something new happened. After only a few minutes of just bobbing around a small area in my left calf muscle began contracting uncontrollably over an area about the size of a dollar coin, causing me a considerable amount of incapacitating pain. No sooner did that settle down a … Continue reading

Run 89, 2009 …sigh! Yet another dog attack…will it never end?
Before I start on my rant, Allow me to point out that I’ve just corrected a counting error and this is Run 89 of 2009 (1211 total km this year so far). So I changed my last post title to reflect that. Anyway, today’s 11 km run was going mighty fine until I yet again was attacked by a stupid owner’s dog. I was just coming out of the wildlife sanctuary when I saw a truck pull up at the end of the trail (still about 4 km from home along country roads). The stupid owner jumped out of his truck and let his two dogs out, one of which immediately attacked me and bit me in the leg, tearing my pants (which now have a 6 inch rip in them) but fortunately not enough to break the skin. It was one of those stupid ugly little poodles owned by … Continue reading

Running and karate update.
I won’t be updating this blog as frequently any more nor will I be continuing to count my karate lessons and runs. I will be posting runs and my cumulative running distances in a year will still be updated in my header. Posting will resume approximately whenever I feel like it. I have been sort of dutifully recording on this blog since I started it for technical reasons. I began this blog just so I could keep up with the technology and have been mindlessly posting, testing, and playing around with it. Changes might happen regarding the ability to access archives, in fact, I may remove everything and start over.

A brief report on my car accident…
My Honda got totaled today, but I am OK. I was “parked” in a left turning zone, signaling a left turn to turn into an IGA parking lot in Edmonton when some guy in a white pickup truck rear ended me at high speed. He then backed up, and sped away, a hit and run. I and other witnesses got his license plate number and it was a company truck (I did not know this) that hit me so this guy is going to get caught if he hasn’t been already. The cops told me they had the business that owned the truck, and that it was a white Ford truck and would be paying them a visit. The cops also told me they think the guy driving it was driving with a suspended license too. I’m not quite sure how they know all this, I don’t know much yet. … Continue reading
