Run 91, 2011…I hate to eat and run, but…

It has been too long since I have run so today was a welcome back run for me. My last real run was a 43 km trail run October 16th. After a recovery period of no running but still going to karate classes, I came down with a nasty chest cold which put me out of commission ever since. Except for a few piddly little 5 km runs, I basically stopped all activity including karate. This cold (or whatever it was) just lingered forever it seemed. I felt really weak and had no energy. Before I knew it over 30 days had passed since I first came down with whatever it was and the end of karate class for this year was fast approaching which meant that I might miss my planned grading to brown belt. I decided I was finally getting better so I began attending the two hour … Continue reading

Tomorrow will run a 7 km trail, but I’m taking it easy…

I am going to take advantage of the relatively good weather to do a wee 7 km trail run tomorrow since there is little snow on the ground. When the snow really flies I will not be able to run trails so I have to do this. Total ouch today as I took a hard accidental punch to the ribs in karate. Now it is painful to breathe deeply. I would have thought the scars from my previous cracked rib would have cushioned the blow a bit. Ha ha. I imagine this is gonna take a month or two to heal up just like the last one did. Tomorrow I begin my regular maintenance running again! It will be such a relief to run again after a 13 day rest!

Run 13, 2010 …do you suffer from Brain Monkeys?

I thought of various other titles for this post. Titles like “It was brutal! It was really really brutal!” But Brain Monkeys won out. And today’s run was brutal. I hurt a lot. I’m just this crazy frozen lump of crazy frozen ting. I barely made it back alive. The wind was brutal. It felt like -20. Most of my run was through ankle deep drifting snow. I am exhausted. Trying to run on a thick unstable surface just kills me. Anyway, I did manage to finish. You may well ask: “But what’s this I hear about Brain Monkeys? How much are they and where can I get one?” Trust me, they come uninvited and you don’t really want one because they multiply and will try to browbeat you into submission. Yes friends, I suffer from the heartbreak of BRAIN MONKEYS. Last Friday I was scheduled for a 12 km … Continue reading

Karate 140

Well the first class of 2010 was relatively easy. I don’t think any of us did any karate during the holidays and the Christmas break of almost a month didn’t help. Classes usually end during this time as the schools where we have our dojo are usually booked solid with Christmas activities for the students. Anyway, I enjoyed the class. We did kata and more basics, and we did a lot of kicks against the mats that were being held up by some of us. I like using mats because we can use full power without hurting anyone. But I like sparring too even though I’m not very good at it because sparring teaches control and awareness that you just can’t get from kata or from hitting a mat. Sparring gives you a real opponent who almost never reacts in a textbook manner. It’s the closest thing to real street … Continue reading

Karate 132

A new training regime has recently been introduced by Sensei Juan Molina in which we warm up by running, and other aerobic exercises which I quite like. It involves a bit of running around the gym for a few laps then changing direction and going the other way. The routine has us slow down to a walk and we kick our outstretched hands while walking. Then we run again, then stop and face the middle and do crunches, pushups, basic blocks, punches, and kicks, then we run in the other direction and repeat the process. We move on to kata, and sparring. I like the new dynamic as it adds variety and makes you stay alert and think.

Karate 127

I managed to make it all the way through this karate class, but I almost didn’t for reasons unrelated to my neck. For some reason, probably because I’m old and crippled, my right forearm went into spasm about an hour and a quarter into the class. It felt like the forearm bone wanted to suddenly snap in half about halfway between my elbow and my wrist. Of course, that’s only what it felt like. I know from experience that it is not the bone itself that is about to break, it’s just some muscles in my arm that contracted and forgot to relax. I couldn’t shake it off and I couldn’t work the knots out of the muscles. It was so painful that I couldn’t do anything with it so my katas and other training went from crisp and well defined to limp. I could not do a low block … Continue reading

Karate 126

Yesterday was my first time back since the summer/fall break. I only managed to do one hour out of the two because my neck/shoulder muscles got tired too quickly and there was a danger that I delay my recovery if I pushed it too much. I am writing this from the perspective of the next day which lets me write about how surprised I am at how sore I am from that class, especially my hamstrings. It illustrates the fact that training is very muscle specific and my running did not help very much with the whole body and leg work that is needed in karate.
